Bringing celebrations and concerns to our church family

"Today, the scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." - Luke 4

Here's what's happening this week...

In anticipation of the coming snow storm, the church will be closed all day on Saturday. Meetings and programs will be rescheduled.

OUR SYMPATHY
The sympathy of the congregation is extended to Beverly Brewer-Villa on the death of her husband Anthony Villa, who died at home on Sunday. His baptism is now complete; for him death is past and pain is ended as he enters into the rest prepared for him. A viewing will be held in the sanctuary on Friday morning at 10:00, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00. The congregation is urged to come together to support this family in their time of grief.

IN OUR PRAYERS

THE CHILDREN'S CHOIR
The New Children's Choir made their debut this past Sunday singing "Go Where I Send Thee!" (photo above, a video has also been uploaded on the church Facebook page). It was wonderful to hear these young voices in worship, and to learn of other children who were inspired to join the chorus. There is no rehearsal this evening. The children's choir will resume regular practice next Wednesday at 5:30, with pizza and wings to follow.

THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY: PROCLAIM JUBILEE
When Jesus stands and reads the scroll of Isaiah that proclaims God’s liberation of the poor and oppressed and announces the arrival of the “year of the Lord’s favor” - he alludes to the biblical Jubilee year. The Jubilee was intended as Israel’s hedge against the inevitable tendency of human societies to concentrate power and wealth in the hands of the few, creating ... classes with the poor at the bottom. Come, let us confess how far are we today from this Biblical vision. The choir will be signing "Rejoice in the Lord Always" by Henry Purcell. Our worship leader will be Ruth Doehring.

ADULT EDUCATION - UNCOVERING EARLY CHRISTIANITY
After worship on January 24 and 31, Elder Barbara Horan will be tackling two questions:
  • Who killed Jesus?; and
  • Was it acceptable to write in someone else's name in Antiquity?
She will be using video resources prepared by Bart Ehrman, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina. Grab  cup of coffee and join the class in the conference room.

CHORAL CONCERT THIS SUNDAY AFTERNOON
The Hudson Chorale, a 90-voice chorus under the direction of Ira Spaulding (above), will hold their sixth season "Winter Concert" in our sanctuary at 3:00, this Sunday afternoon. Dubbed Classic in the Cathedral, the program will include:
  • Requiem - Maurice Duruflé
  • 4 Motets Francis Poulenc
  • Deux Melodies Hebraiques – Maurice Ravel
  • O Sacrum Convivium – Olivier Messiaen

CAN YOU PROVIDE A MEAL?
Melanie Millard is coordinating meals for the Arguelles family as they return from Peru and in their time of grief. If you can provide a meal, Melanie will pick it up between 5:00 and 5:30 PM and deliver it to Zoraya. Meals are for three people: Zoraya, Victor (her father) and Sarah. They have no food allergies and are open to any meals. They especially enjoy fresh salads, vegetables and pastas.

Please visit Take-Them-A-Meal to sign up online and for more information. Melanie can deliver on every day except for Monday and Wednesday - if you could deliver a meal on those days, please email Melanie

2016 Lenten Programs

THE NEW JIM CROW
Now and then a book comes along that sounds an alarm, challenging prevailing ways of viewing and interpreting our world and exposing a profound injustice that is hiding plain sight. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, by Michelle Alexander, is such  book. It is a call to conscience, a call to action. The book argues that nothing short of a major social movement - a human rights movement rooted in the recognition of the basic dignity and humanity of all of us - holds any hope for ending mass incarceration and breaking the cycle of racial caste in the United States.

All members of the congregation are encouraged to read the book and join the weekly discussion throughout the Season of Lent as we contemplate the crucified. Copies are available for purchase ($14) in the church office. Reserve one now.

Feb. 21:  The Recurring Cycle (Intro & Chapter 1)
Feb. 28:  How the System Works (Chaps 2 & 3)
Mar. 6:   Racial Indifference and the Undercaste (Chaps 4 & 5)
Mar. 13:  The Movement (Chapter 6)

INTERGENERATIONAL GODLY PLAY FOR LENT
Have you ever wondered why our children’s curriculum is called Godly “Play”?  Pastor Lynn and our Godly Play teaching team will lead an intergenerational Godly Play series after worship during Lent this year.  For four Sundays (February 21, 28 and March 6 and 13) join us to experience Godly Play for yourself!  Why should the children be the only ones who get to experience Godly Play?
