David works primarily in oil crayon, which allows him to draw with paint. He makes no effort to smooth over the bold marks and scrapes of his process, creating abstracted portraits that are raw in color and texture. His work portrays complex and self-aware personalities who engage with the viewer. David counts Phil as his most influential teacher. This is his first feature show at Gallery 114.

Known to many in Portland as the founder and inspired teacher of The Drawing Studio, Phil has declined to show in galleries since 1999. In the intervening years, he has made hundreds of very private drawings and has mastered the skill of ‘blind drawing,’ in which his focused observation directs his mark-making hand, with scarcely a glance at the image he is creating. A group of extraordinary drawings has resulted, renewing Phil's desire to share his work with the public. In February, the curtain will open once again on the work of an Oregon master as Gallery 114 presents six of Phil's “unseen drawings.”
