MERI is pleased to host and participate in a global event on Wednesday January 27, 2016 at 14:00 celebrating and highlighting the work of think tanks. In coordination with the Lauder Institute of University of Pennsylvania, and Think Tanks and Civil Society Programs in 60 countries, MERI will host a special debate on: "Why Think Tanks Matter to Policy Makers and the Public.” Key outcome will be promoting collaborative engagement between researchers and stakeholders. MERI Economic Forum 2016 is the first of its kind to be held in Iraq or the Kurdistan Region. The Forum is designed to address the country’s economy and the urgent need for its radical restructuring; and to engage policy- and decision-makers, academics and other international experts in a debate to promote a comprehensive approach to the economic reforms.

The Kurdistan Region is now entering its third year of economic crisis, with mounting harmful social and political fallout emerging from it. The system was never prepared to buffer a crisis of this magnitude. In this workshop, key questions were debated, including: What is the ultimate origin of these woes? What can be done to curb the immediate crisis effects? How to transition towards a more sustainable economic system? During the workshop MERI's report "In the Best Times and the Worst Times: Addressing the Structural Weaknesses of Kurdistan Region's Economy" was used as a working document.

The vulnerability of Kurdistan’s economy to volatility in the international markets was painfully revealed by last year’s fall in oil prices. Now, almost a year and a half later, it has become abundantly clear that Kurdistan’s dependence on the export of a single commodity as the main driver for its GDP is both economically undesirable and fiscally unsustainable.
