Why is Do Not Disturb so Disturbing?

Like iPad Tips, Tricks, and News - Why is Do Not Disturb so Disturbing? on Facebook

Hi <<First Name>>,

You probably know that, when turned on, the Do Not Disturb feature on your iPhone or iPad will keep collecting all your notifications and alerts but will do so quietly.

That a good thing, especially when you're in a meeting, at a romantic dinner, at a movie, or simply trying to get a good night's sleep.

Do Not Disturb will make sure you can work, play, eat, or sleep in peace and quiet, and still find all your alerts waiting for you in the Notification Center when you're ready.

Note: Swipe down from the top of your screen to display the Notification Center.

That being said, Do Not Disturb is not always bullet proof. In fact, it can be quite disturbing.

Did you know that when Do Not Disturb is enabled, phone calls and FaceTime calls are silenced only when your device is locked?

That's right, silenced ONLY when locked!

That means, if Do Not Disturb is on while your iPhone or iPad is active (not at the lock screen) you will be bothered by incoming phone and FaceTime calls.

This actually happened to me a few time while I was teaching a class.  I had Do Not Disturb on, but incoming calls were not being silenced.  Ring! Ring! Ring!...Disturbing!

Luckily, Apple has provided more control of the Do Not Disturb feature in Settings.  Let's explore this together...

How To Turn On Do Not Disturb
There are three ways to turn on Do Not Disturb.
  1. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb > Tap on Manual

  2. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen to enter the Control Center.  Next, tap the Moon icon.

  3. Summon Siri and say "Do Not Disturb" (you can also ask Siri to "turn off Do Not Disturb")
You can verify that DND is on by looking for the crescent moon icon in the top-right section of your screen (status bar).

How To Always Silence Phone and FaceTime Calls
  1. First, go to the DND settings --  Settings > Do Not Disturb.
  2. Next, swipe to the bottom of the screen and locate -- SILENCE.
  3. Tap Always. (should see a check mark next to Always)
  4. Now incoming phone and FaceTime calls will be silenced when the device is locked or unlocked

How To Schedule Do Not Disturb Times
  1. First, go to the DND settings --  Settings > Do Not Disturb.
  2. Next, tap the Scheduled switch on.
  3. You will now be able to set a scheduled on and off time for quiet hours -- Tap the From and To option to edit times.
  4. If you are wondering, you cannot schedule quiet times for individual days -- it is limited to all days. (Bummer!)

How To Allow Calls From Certain People
  1. First, go to the DND settings --  Settings > Do Not Disturb.
  2. Next, tap the Allow Calls From option.
  3. You will be given the option on who you allow calls to ring from when in DND mode -- Everyone, No One, Favorite contacts, or Specific group of contacts.
  4. If you are wondering, I classify certain family members as favorites (in Contacts app).  Then I choose to Allow Calls From > Favorites in the Do Not Disturb settings

How To Allow Repeated Calls
  1. First, go to the DND settings --  Settings > Do Not Disturb.
  2. Next, tap the Repeated Calls option.
  3. When enabled, a second call from the same person within three minutes will not be silenced.

Will My Wake Up Alarm Be Silenced When DND Is Enabled?
No, if you set a wake up alarm in the Clock app and you have Do Not Disturb enabled, your alarm will not be silenced.  It will still wake you up.  Sorry, you cannot use that excuse with the boss for being late!
