Dental sealants for grade-schoolers made possible in part by the Coshocton Foundation

01/21/2016 LICKING COUNTY, OHIO – The Licking County Health Department (LCHD) was recently awarded $5,000 from the Coshocton Foundation grant program in support of LCHD’s Dental Sealant Program. Funds from the grant will be used to apply dental sealants for students in seven Coshocton County schools.

The LCHD Dental Sealant Program provides dental education and applies dental sealants to four grades of students in 31 schools from 10 school districts in Licking, Coshocton, Knox, and Morrow counties. This regional program is offered in schools where 40 percent or more of the students participate in the Free or Reduced Meal Program. With parental consent, preventive sealants are placed on children’s teeth at no cost to them.

LCHD has been operating the Dental Sealant Program since 1989, and expanded to serve Coshocton County schools in 1997. Dental sealants are a plastic material placed on the pits and fissures of the chewing surfaces of teeth in order to prevent cavities. Sealants cover up to 90 percent of the places where decay occurs in children’s teeth. The program is offered to second grade students with newly erupted first permanent molars, and sixth grade students who have gotten their second (12 year) molars. Third and seventh graders who participated in the program during the previous school year are also screened and additional sealants are applied as necessary.
