Happy New Year from the Downhill Ski Club.  Most of you by now are heading back to the reality of work or study, with a lucky few still on holiday.

Most of you will have heard the news that RAL had their Skifield Licence renewed, and as a result there has been a flurry of activity on the mountain, including the removal of the National chair.  More details will no doubt come out soon in the RAL newsletter.

The first committee meeting for 2016 was held on Tuesday 19 January and the committee was able to establish dates for the summer period.  Below you will find details of the working bees and summer events that we have planned to date.

We would welcome any group or individual bringing additional summer event ideas to the table.  Bring your friends and workmates and encourage them to enjoy what the region has to offer in the summertime.  We would be happy to contact the mail list and canvas interest on your behalf.

SUMMER EVENTS
The TIMBER TRAIL
Saturday 27 February 2016

Bernie Prendergast and Brian Cruse are arranging this fantastic Mountain Bike weekend on behalf of the club.  Experience the feeling of being suspended in time, as you begin your ride along a 41km section of the Timber Trail.  The full trail is 84km and boasts some of the highest and longest suspension bridges in New Zealand, the Timber Trail weaves its way through ancient forest, across ancestral lands of local Maori Tribes, and along part of the historic Ongarue Tramway.

The Timber Trail is nestled in Pureora Forest, between Lake Taupo and Te Kuiti, in the Central North Island. Begin your journey at Pureora Village in the north, ending at Ongarue in the south. Experience the full grandeur of the forest, open to cyclists and walkers alike ensuring the Timber Trail offers something for everyone.

Check out their website for frequently asked question:  http://www.thetimbertrail.com/plan-your-trip/frequently-asked-questions/

Van’s will be available to transport bikes from National Park to the trail and return, and transport from the finish back to your vehicles will need to be arranged.

The ride will be followed by a BBQ back at National Park.  Bookings are to be made via the Website and the normal summer rates are applicable.
HAPPY HIKING

At the moment we have a few idea under consideration.  Over the years, the club has arrange a number of hikes over the Tongariro Crossing and up to the Crater, however this year we would like to bring something new to the members.
As yet a weekend has not been set, however this will take place in either April or May once the days are a little cooler.  We hope to be able to firm this up in the next few weeks.
