Why Nigeria can’t win Lassa fever battle as Ebola-Health minister 

The Federal Government has assured that it is committed to ending the epidemic of Lassa fever this year. The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, gave the assurance on Wednesday while addressing State House correspondents. "We are committed to signing the obituary of the Lassa fever this year", the minister said. He, however, noted that the country could win the battle against Lassa fever the same way it won against Ebola because the latter was a single importation to Nigeria, while the former was endemic in the country.

LASSA FEVER: FG targets 10,000 health centres, sets up Committtee

Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adeboye, yesterday, gave an assurance that Lassa Fever would be completely eradicated in the country this year. The minister, who spoke to journalists after participating at the signing of updated Abuja commitment on polio eradication at the Presidential Villa, said the Federal Government had concluded arrangement to set up 10,000 primary health care centres across the 109 senatorial districts in the country to tackle the disease. According to him, the first 5,000 centres would be established this year, starting with Fika community in Borno State, where the disease was first discovered.

Lassa fever: Resident doctor dies in OAUTHC
 
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Osun State, has confirmed that a doctor in the hospital died of Lassa fever. When the news of the doctor’s death – the first record of the disease in the state – first broke on Monday, the hospital said it could not verify the cause of his death. Speaking through its committee chairman on Lassa fever, Prof. Adedeji Onayade, the hospital said the doctor’s blood sample was obtained and sent to the Federal Ministry of Health for confirmation.

El Rufai sponsors 30 female students on medical course to Uganda

The Kaduna Government led by Governor Nasir El-Rufai has awarded scholarship to 30 female students from the State to study medical courses in Uganda. The Commissioner for Education, Dr Shehu Adamu, said in a statement in Kaduna on Tuesday that the students would depart for Uganda before the end of January. He said the aim was to encourage girl-child education by enhancing access to educational opportunities.

Police nab fake medical doctor with 7 forged certificates

A 43-year-old self-acclaimed medical doctor, Adesina Opeyemi, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for impersonation. Opeyemi, who resides at 1, Alowolodu Street, Alapere-Ketu, was apprehended at Alakara area of the state. Following a petition received from the management of Lagos University Teaching Hospital LUTH, Idi Araba, about the activities of Opeyemi, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Alakara, Mr. Emmanuel Adebisi, a Chief Superintendent of Police, was mandated to investigate the case which led to the arrest of the suspect.

Lagos Assembly to initiate bill on Health Trust Fund

The Lagos State House of Assembly has disclosed that plans are underway to initiate the Health Trust Fund Bill, which if passed into law, will assist in the funding of the state health sector. This disclosure was made on Tuesday by the Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, Hon. Segun Olulade, when he led other members of the committee on an inspection tour to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
