Life informs art and visa versa, but sometimes, life puts art in peril. When we read stories about artists, entertainers and athletes not only having triumph over challenges but using crisis to fuel their craft, the stories are usually told in hindsight. For the first ever Highwater Mag interview, I had the great fortune to talk with Janice Bond, a widely-sought visual artist, curator, entrepreneur and serial inspirer. On the eve of her first solo exhibition, Janice and I met at Women Made Gallery in Chicago to talk about how personal challenges, including a car accident and the deaths of a friend and her grandfather, all in the same month, have informed the work she is presenting tonight.

Janice's two shows, "Abandoned Margins: Policing the Black Female Body" + "Beyond the Binary," opening tonight at Women Made Gallery in Chicago, IL and run though February 25th.
