A better framework for innovation
The EU is lagging behind major competitors in its ability to invest in research and turn these investments into marketable products and services. Within this framework, key stakeholders gathered on January 26 to discuss concrete proposals to boost innovation governance, better innovation regulation and science-based policy-making. Among others, European Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, Commissioners Carlos Moedas and Elżbieta Bieńkowska took part in the discussion together with industry leaders, trade unions and the scientific community. Whereas Commissioner Moedas highlighted two ways to go from theory to practice, BUSINESSEUROPE, the European Risk Forum and the European Round Table of Industrialists stressed the importance of the Innovation Principle.
EU funding boosts scientific excellence & competitiveness
Investment in research and innovation from the EU budget has greatly improved scientific excellence in Europe and strengthened its competitiveness by improving industry's capacity to innovate, concludes an evaluation of the FP7, the EU's research funding programme between 2007 and 2013. Led by an independent group, this report shows that the €55 billion invested proved highly attractive to private sector participants, including a record number of SMEs, and also set up joint technology initiatives in key areas like innovative medicine.
