SC Report to Claremont City Council

On January 26 more than 40 friends of SC, including students, families, and community leaders, overflowed out of the chambers as our Chair, Steve Sabicer, made a positive presentation to Claremont City Council.  Steve reported on the wonderful accomplishments of SC in the past 18 months, and asked for the City's continued support in 2016 and beyond.  The Council was impressed, especially by the children with hand-made posters!  We appreciate all your support.

Keep Mosquitoes out of Your Rain Barrel, prevent Invasive Aedes!

Mosquitoes need water to lay their eggs and grow, and most rain barrels are NOT designed to keep mosquitoes out.  You may prevent mosquito breeding by putting a smooth top on your barrel, covering openings with fine mesh wire screen, preventing water collection on the top, and inspecting it weekly.  Invasive aedes mosquitoes are spreading throughout California, including our area, and bite aggressively during the day, potentially transmitting disease.

Getting to our Environmental Health Chair, Freeman Allen...

As promised, I am highlighting volunteer leaders and action groups of Sustainable Claremont as I get to know them during my inaugural year as the Sustainability Coordinator.  In January, Dr. Freeman Allen, Environmental Health Chair and Chair Emeritus of Sustainable Claremont, told me about his history and involvement with SC.
Freeman described his long love of the environment from when he lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and skied with the Sierra Club.  He moved to Claremont in 1954 to be a Professor of Chemistry at Pomona College, and was dismayed by the haze that blocked views of the mountains.  Freeman volunteered to apply his scientific understanding of air pollution with
the California Air Resources Board, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the South Coast Air Quality Management District Citizens Advisory Council.  Due to the efforts of Freeman and his peers California implemented motor vehicle smog regulations and now we have can see more beautiful skies and run outdoors with less coughing.

After Freeman retired he joined the League of Women Voters Water Task Force as they worked on the Thompson Creek Spreading Grounds Project.  They continue to advocate preserving the open land around the dam for
 groundwater recharge and habitat restoration.
Around that time the LWV was lobbying for the City of Claremont to look at sustainability as it revised its' General Plan.  With Freeman's involvement the City formed a Task Force which suggested that a community group address sustainability, and thus Sustainable Claremont began.

Through Sustainable Claremont Freeman met others who wanted to collaborate to improve environmental health.  Through their conversations about "Transition Towns" and "The Oberlin Project", they devised how Claremont citizens, institutions, businesses, and the City could work together to be sustainable.  Soon Freeman and others formed the Claremont Home Energy Retrofit Project which now serves a wide area with tools for reducing the carbon footprint of buildings.  He also began to work on The Claremont Project, which hopes to unite many of the energy saving activities of Claremont institutions and businesses for interconnected efficiency and encouragement.

Currently I know Freeman as one of the most dependable and involved volunteers at Sustainable Claremont.  I have the pleasure of working with him on the CoolCalifornia Challenge and Claremont Energy Challenge, as well as at meetings of the Board of Directors.  YOU can get educated and excited at the Sustainability Dialogs Freeman hosts almost every month (usually the first Monday at 7 pm in the Hahn Building of Pomona Collge).

Check the S.C. Calendar for the next Sustainability Dialog HERE.

Freeman is motivated to care for the environment as he loves his grandchildren and wants us to sustain the health of our earth and each other for years to come.

Thank you Freeman for bringing clean air, clear water, and a healthy future to all of us!

Sincerely,

Kate Irvine
