Keeping Residents in the Know!
The main use for the sign at the park has generally been to advertise special events and messages from community groups.

Thanks to resident Lynn Pulsifer who made the suggestion that the sign should be used to publicize town meetings to keep us better informed.

Kentville Business Profile
Grand Street Inn
Welcome to The Grand Street Inn Bed & Breakfast located on Main Street, Kentville.

Owned and operated by Richard and Sandra Snow, this B&B is a beautiful, stately Queen Ann Revival built in the late 1800’s.

According to the Nova Scotia Tourism website, it has fine woodwork and tasteful decor and warm & gracious hospitality
.

History of the House
The house was built by a dentist, Louis St Clair Saunders. One of his pamphlets was found in the wall of the Carriage House when the Snows moved in.

It is believed the Carriage House was built in 1893, and the house itself in 1901. The house then changed hands to Archibald A Thomson who built on the back piece including the bathroom in the 1930's.  It was then sold to Lin Comeau in 1955 (father of Kentville historian, Louis Comeau).  In 1984 it was sold to the Bowness family, and then to Sandra and Richard Snow in 1994.

Kentville Cooks
Each edition we will feature a different Kentville resident with a favourite recipe. Would you like to be featured? Email us!

Angie McWaid has lived in Kentville for 15 years. Not being from here she didn't know a soul but has made this her home and did so within a few months of living here.

Angie is a constable with the Kentville Police Service but has worked in different areas in the department since she started 15 years ago.

So what does she love about Kentville? So many things!
"I love how the school is so supportive and involved in the community; I love how there are these wonderful trails and the marsh where we can explore with kids; of course the fact we have our own police service;  I love having our own library here and that the town will lend out snowshoes; I love the people  in town who smile and like to see you when I walk the beat at work; and lastly but certainly not least, I love the feeling of safety that comes with knowing I work in a community that my kids go to school in and am never that far from them if they need me."

Historical Moment
History of Kentville's Bridge
There’s speculation about when the bridge in Kentville was first built. Was it Acadian or Planter or what? Here’s some interesting background on the bridge in which this question isn’t quite answered, despite Ed Coleman's best efforts at uncovering the full story.

Read more in Coleman's historical column from the Advertiser.
Citizen Concerns
Question: My question would be – why can we not have the walking trail cleared of snow for walkers.  I was told it was so skiers could use it?  There are far more walkers than skiers and the skiers can use the ball fields and soccer fields if they want to ski.
I would think the section from Shannex to KCA could be done with the sidewalk plow or snowblower.

Answer:
The Town of Kentville strives to ensure that there are a variety of ways for people to be active in the Town of Kentville. The Kentville trail system is a wonderful asset and promotes active transportation.  During the three "snow free" seasons the trail is used by walkers, runners, bikers, and parents with strollers etc.

In the winter the Town plows almost 6km of sidewalks from East to West so that folks are able to continue walking and running. The trails are groomed to offer the community access to new activities and alternative options for using the trail as an active transportation route by snowshoeing, skiing, and kick-sledding.

Miner's Marsh is a bit tricky to keep groomed because it's hard to get the machinery down the steep embankment without getting stuck. But they do the best they can when they can!

The Town hopes that by offering a wide variety of activities and opportunities, that folks will be able to get outside and enjoy the winter weather in all kinds of different ways!

Winter Literacy Fun at the KCA Library

At the KCA library we will be celebrating Literacy this winter with a little twist.

Family Literacy Week: During the week of January 25th – 29th we will be celebrating Family Literacy.

Every family should take 15 minutes of fun with literacy. Below are some suggestions.

FAMILY LITERACY NIGHT
On Wednesday January 27th, Primary to Grade 2 students are invited to Story Time in the KCA cafeteria at 6:30 pm.
Parents should accompany their child. Come dressed in your pj's and bring your favorite stuffed toy.

Enjoy a few stories, have a snack and go home to bed.

15 New Literacy Activities for 2016!
  1. Lights out, talk on: After your bedtime story, turn the lights off and talk about new endings to the story you just read together.

  2. Surfing Snacks: Go online together to find out how your favourite foods are made. Are they something you can make together at home?

  3. Find A-B-C: Have an alphabet scavenger hunt to look for things that begin with each letter of the alphabet. If you can’t find some letters, go outside or try looking in books and magazines.

  4. Travel the World: Use your library card as your passport to check out books on different countries. Learn about their traditions and celebrations.

  5. Float in a Boat: Work together to fold a family fleet of origami boats. (Find all the steps in the FamilyLiteracyFirst.ca sample module)

  6. Let's go Shopping: Have kids write the family grocery list out themselves, then bring it to the store. Let them check each item off the list.

  7. Number Walk: As you put on your shoes, choose something you want to count during your walk. It could be dogs, trees, stop signs, cars—anything you want! On your walk, count how many you can find.

  8. Word Wall: Learn one new word every day. Display them by creating a family word wall with Bristol board and markers. Can you make a sentence with the words on your wall?

  9. How was your day today? Exchange notes (or write a journal) with your child telling each other about the best part of your day. Or switch it up: what’s the best thing you expect to happen tomorrow?

  10. A Course of Course: Build an obstacle course through your family room, and draw a map of how to go through it from beginning to end.

  11. Sing chat: Sing a conversation with your kids to the tune of your favourite song. Bonus points if you can make your song rhyme!

  12. Snow You Tell Me: Use emptied dish soap bottles filled with water and food colouring to write messages and draw in the snow.

  13. Know it All: Together, look online for the meaning of funny words like “collywobbles” and "onomatopoeia." Test your parents' word power!

  14. Have a Book-nic: Organize an indoor picnic with books and tasty treats. Choose a theme – try honey-flavoured cereal and read Winnie the Pooh.

  15. Game On: Start family board game night and play a different game each week. Family members can take turns reading instructions and game cards as well as keeping score.

The scene is the exclusive fur salon of Bodley and Crouch, where Crouch (the well-meaning innocent) struggles to keep things on an even keel despite the energetic philandering of his partner. At the moment, Bodley is trying to secure the affections of his latest would-be mistress by "selling" her husband an expensive mink fur coat for a fraction of its real worth, and the stammering Crouch is saddled with the task of consummating the sale with a straight face. But, as luck would have it, the husband seizes the bargain coat as the perfect gift for his own mistress—whereupon the complications burgeon uproariously, with poor Crouch caught in the middle.

Increased Access to Kentville Council Documents

The Town of Kentville has made some changes to the website in order to provide better access to Council and CAC meeting packages.

Hard copies of Council Meeting packages have always been provided to the media, and made available at meetings for the public who attend.  Starting January 2016, now interested parties can access full meeting packages online following meetings.

Interested parties can see the meeting packages online here: http://kentville.ca/town-hall/minutes-agenda/ by opening the agenda for a meeting and clicking on hyperlinks within the document to view corresponding material.

The Town is hopeful that by allowing better access to meeting packages, citizens will find it easier to become better informed and more engaged in issues before Council each month.
