LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Each week, as I begin to focus on my note to parents, topics seem to jockey for priority. On any given week there are a number of issues that come up, topics that are urgent, that are all equally important. This week I listened to teachers talk about volume-challenged classrooms. How can children learn when they strain to listen to one another? I also had a heartfelt conversation with a parent who shared her concern for her child’s need and trepidation with finding, being, and expressing himself.  These do not seem mutually exclusive topics. They both seem to be about listening and being able to be heard. How do we support our children when they struggle with finding their identity? How do we protect our children when others tease beyond what he or she can handle? How do we guide our children to listen and develop empathy? How do we slow our children down to simply listen?

The task of public education is to work together, parents and teachers, to raise children who will understand and internalize the best habits of a democratic society. Not a small order. On our best days, we endeavor to raise smart, strong, creative and thoughtful children. Young people open to different ways of thinking and being, able to listen, to reflect, to learn, and to accept. Our end game is they leave us respecting the rights of all others. I do not pretend to have all the answers.  I know that in our classrooms we have begun to explore one way of listening, through our Way of Council. We will have a Way of Council parent education night on February 22nd. I look forward to beginning and continuing this working together.

PIZZA FOR A GOOD CAUSE

On Friday, February 5th from 4pm-9pm, the 5th grade students are having a fundraiser at Blaze Pizza at the Glendale Galleria (Top Floor Bloomingdale’s Wing). When you place your order please make sure to tell them you are from Ivanhoe Elementary School. 20% percent of money spent there that is identified for Ivanhoe will come back to us to support camp high trails and 5th grade. Spread the word to neighbors, friends and family. SUPPORT YOUR SOCCER TEAM!

The 2016 Ivanhoe Dragons are about to participate in the Los Silverlake Cup Soccer Superclassico on Saturday, February 13th!  Support the adults who love our school so much that they are willing to practice at 7:30am on Saturdays all year long for the privilege of raising funds to support Ivanhoe.  Check out the roster of players and then support your friends and neighbors.

SHOW SOME LOVE FOR IVANHOE IN FEBRUARY

The Annual Giving Committee will begin calling and emailing folks about the path to 100% participation in our annual campaign soon. We want to figure out how to help each family buy-in to our school’s current and future health. We believe in collective responsibility for our school and our volunteers are committed to helping each family find a level of financial support that is doable- whether it is $5 per week, or $10 per month or $1,000 per year. We have about 55% of families participating. Let’s get to 100% together!

SCHOOL REPORT CARD SURVEYS-WE NEED YOU!

The school report surveys for this year will be landing in your mailbox or your child’s backpack soon if you haven’t seen them already. Last year, only 37% of families responded. The results of that survey become an important picture of our school for prospective families and can be a helpful measure of our school’s strengths and weaknesses for our teachers and administrators. Please fill yours out and turn it in. Classes with 100% participation will get an extra 15 minutes of yard play from their teachers!
AMAZON SMILE!

If you haven’t already, please reset your amazon.com accounts to support Friends of Ivanhoe! If you have been shopping with your Prime account, please reset your bookmarks and use amazon smile. If you have been supporting another organization and would like to switch it to support Friends of Ivanhoe, simply change your charity in the space below the search bar in amazon smile. Thank you for helping to support our school!
