Fauna Nest Box monitoring
B4C has sponsored a fauna nest box monitoring program in the area. Mike Fox of Mt Gravatt Environment Group is undertaking the monitoring with cameras and equipment from a BCC Environment Grant.
Monitoring and maintaining nest boxes ensures effectiveness in providing refuge and breeding sites for native birds & arboreal mammals.
Catchment Manager Wayne Cameron says he’s particularly pleased that the boxes set up at the B4C fauna crossing point at Pine Mountain Rd (Salvin Creek) have four squirrel gliders and a possum in them.
“The program will be on-going and we are seeking nest box modifications to prevent the invasive and destructive Common Myna from taking over,” Wayne says.

Myna update
We've had continued strong interest from and involvement by residents in the Myna Humane Reduction Program, with positive results. Coverage of the program in the South East Advertiser saw a further spike in interest. B4C's Stefan Hattingh will also be speaking on Mynas at a Redland City Council event.
The Common Myna (also known as the Indian Myna) is a big threat to our birds and arboreal mammals.

Sustainability Centre Open Day - with Fermented Food!
Saturday 5th March | 9am-11.30am
 At our March Open Day Roslyn Bono will give a presentation (with a tasting too!) on Fermented Food at 9.30am. Roslyn is regularly educating people on the health benefits of fermentation and great recipes.
Come along for a tour of the gardens and nursery too. Find out about the latest activities at B4C and chat to the friendly team over a cuppa. Everyone is very welcome and it's a great way to connect with your catchment! The Sustainability Centre is on the corner of Wright St & 1358 Old Cleveland Rd, Carindale.

Clean Up Australia Day in our catchment
Sunday 6th March
Clean Up Australia inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. They can also be a great way to get out into the fresh air and mix with other locals.
Make sure you wear a hat, sunscreen and closed in shoes. Bring a bottle of water. Some of the clean-ups provide a morning tea of some sort too!

Wetlands in focus
The guest speaker at our February Open Day was Jock Mackenzie (pictured below) Director of MangroveWatch based at TropWATER, James Cook University.
Jock provided some fascinating and important information regarding the role of and challenges to our wetlands. He discussed the impacts that sea level rising and human activities have on our wetlands. "We don't manage change very well as a human population" Jock said. He also said that some of the existing laws to protect our wetlands are problematic as they are either not followed or are too much of a blanket approach. He provided an excellent local focus with data and images relating to Bulimba and Tingalpa Creeks.
Apanie Wood from SEQ Catchments also spoke to the group encouraging the community to submit photos of salt marshes at https://www.flickr.com/groups/saltmarshseq/ to help with awareness-raising and promotion of salt marshes.

Corporate Clean-Up
We partnered with Conservation Volunteers Australia to host a corporate clean-up this week. It was held around Lytton Road, near the Oxbow. It also included a clear-up near the Hemmant Flying Fox colony at Aquarium Passage.
The group, representing various corporations, collected over 800kg of rubbish including car tyres, car parts, traffic light and bottles etc.

Reducing urban nutrient pollution into Moreton Bay
 On Thursday 11th February, thanks to a Brisbane Airport Corporation Community Grant, Brisbane Catchments Network held a forum at Griffith Uni EcoCentre.
The event was aimed at developing an integrated research and management approach to reduce urban nutrient pollution in Moreton Bay. Participants were from from industry, research institutions, government and the broader community. View the key presentations from the event >>

Alex's internship
 We've had the pleasure of Alexander Vanek working here with us through his internship that forms part of his study of Environmental Management at The University of Queensland.
Alex worked on a number of locations and his main project focused on Brisbane City Council bushland reserve sites. He also undertook a range of tasks at our Sustainability Centre including solar panel studies and some chook care!
Last week, he gave his final presentation on his work here and subsequent report that we'll be able to further utilise. We were also very pleased to hear from his presentation that Alex enjoyed the close-knit community of B4C!
