High Sheriff of Hampshire Announces Launch of Community Awards

Lady Louisa Portal, High Sheriff of Hampshire and District President of Basingstoke West Scouts, has announced a new set of Community Awards, to recognise public servants, individual volunteers or community groups based in Hampshire, who are making a significant contribution to their communities. The focus of these awards will be on public servants, individuals or groups working on law and order related projects, with a particular emphasis on those that enhance safety and cohesion in our communities. The deadline for nominations is 26th January 2016. For more details, visit http://www.hantscf.org.uk/news/press-releases/high-sheriff-of-hampshire-announces-launch-of-community-awards.aspx
Reminder - Our brands Refreshed
To coincide with the refreshed programme, a new edition of the brand guidelines was published in 2015 providing advice on the main Scout brand, the fleur de lis (arrowhead) and the five youth sections. In addition to showing the various logo options and colour palette, you will also find information on our strategic aims, values, tone of voice, illustration, video and social media. There is now more emphasis on an integrated family of brands, with more obvious links to the fleur de lis and emphasising the continuity and progression in the 6-25 Programme.

A range of resources for the revised brands is available on the Scout Print Centre.  The corporate ‘Scouts Be Prepared’ single colour logo for Scouting and Serif Black font remain in use.
Suisse Adventure Winter

Some of you may be aware of the “Suisse Adventure” trip in February half term being organised by Hampshire Scouts.  My two kids were eagerly awaiting the trip but unfortunately one of them has had to withdraw at last minute due to University exams.

This means there is now an empty place on the trip which needs filled – hence this mail.    The SA16 team have agreed that I can offer this spot so long as we can fill it soon.   As there is not a lot of time left – and I would rather someone gained from the experience of the trip -  I am offering the slot for a discounted price.   The cost was £999 – and that is what everyone else on the trip is paying.  I am open to sensible offers –  please!

NOTE : the trip is open to Explorer Scouts, Young Leaders and Network  but is now also open to adult members (see below for details).

More info on the trip can be found on the website :  www.sa16winter.org.uk  but the key info / highlights are as follows (courtesy of the SA16 site). If there is more than one person interested I do reserve the right to choose J

Who is running the trip?
Suisse Adventure is a Hampshire Scouts led activity expedition to the International Scout Centre in Kandersteg, Switzerland. The trip usually takes place roughly every 4 years and is open to both Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members in Hampshire.

When is it?
The winter trip will take place in the February 2016 half term break which is 13 February to 21 February 2016.

The winter trip will offer a typically winter programme; 2 days of skiing or snowboarding, sledging, cross country skiing, curling, igloo making, ice skating, snowshoe hiking and a few Swiss themed evening activities!

No previous experience of any of the activities is required as lessons will be included.

Where is it?
For the winter trip we shall be staying at the international Guide Centre called Our Chalet in Adelboden which is renowned for its winter sports.

Who can go?
The winter trip is open to Explorer Scouts (& Young Leaders) & Scout Network members aged between 14 and 24 on the 13 February 2016. You must be registered with an ESU, YLU or Scout Network.

ALSO, the trip is now open to all adults members wanting a winter adventure! This means any leader / Active Support member etc who holds a current DBS disclosure

What is the cost?
The trip is £999 per person, but as mentioned earlier I am prepared to offer this place at a discounted price so someone can get the benefit of the experience.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED :  please contact Iain Ivory by mail at iain.ivory@btinternet.com  so we can discuss cost etc and if we reach agreement, you will then be put in contact with the SA16 team who will manage the transfer of the booking to you and sort out forms etc.

The SA16 team need to have a replacement name confirmed asap in order to change travel  / insurance / other forms,  so this offer is open until next weekend,  Sat 23rd January.

Note, there is a pre-departure meeting for all attendees in Winchester on 28th January,.

Thanks
Iain

2016 Target Sprint / Run And Shoot / Sprint And Shoot
After last years successful pilot of this event, we have now confirmed the date for the 2016 competition.

Saturday 7th MAY 2016.

Please register your interest by emailing us at: enquiries@targetsprint.org.uk

How the competition works.

Each Participant will be given a start time. They will compete against all participants in their age category. There will be 6 participants competing at any one time.

Each participant will from the start run approx 400m, followed by shooting 5 knockdown targets 35mm in diameter with springer break barrel rifles at a distance of approx 7.5m. They will then run the 400m again, followed by the 5 targets. Then run another 400m to finish. On each attempt at the 5 targets each participant will be given a maximum of 20 shots. A time penalttywill be applied for each remaining target not knocked down.

This is a fun event and the feedback from participants last year was positive. We aim to have a similar Tin Can pistol shooting range (just for fun) available while you are waiting along with refreshments.

So ask yourself 3 questions.

  1. Can I Run?
  2. Can I Shoot?
  3. Can I Run and Shoot?

If you can answer Yes to any of these then why not try the event and see how you get on. The competition is only open to registered scout members. So if you are a Scout, Explorer, Young Leader, Leader, or registered helper then why not give it a go!

Gone Home
Kate Bateman went home on the 15th January after a long illness which she bore bravely.
Kate was a Cub Scout Leader in Norfolk and Singapore following her husband John on his tours of duty with The Royal Air Force.
When they returned to Britain Kate took 8th Frogmore and Darby Greens Apache Cub Pack under her wing.  She was remembered by Rayner Meyer (Her D.C.)
