"Wisdom is intelligence drenched in culture" ~ David Fleming

David Fleming's Lean Logic now available for pre-order!

If that's all you need to know...

You'll find the gorgeous covers designed by Evan Gaffney just below, and the links to place your pre-orders in bold underneath.  At this point, early pre-orders are the best way to build the buzz and support the books and David's legacy.

As core friends of the books, later I'll ask whether you'd be happy to post some online reviews, but obviously that shouldn't be done before they are released in July (even though some of you may have had sneak previews!)

Here is the beautiful cover for the full publication of David Fleming's unique masterwork Lean Logic: A Dictionary for the Future and How to Survive It, which is now available for pre-order.

Click the cover above for Lean Logic's own dedicated webpage.  Or to pre-order in the UK, click here.

The book itself has been thoroughly edited over the past few years by yours truly, and also now features a much more attractive layout (see sample spreads here and here), a foreword from Jonathon Porritt, completed endnotes and (epic!) bibliography, full index, editor's preface and several wood engravings selected or commissioned by David that were inadvertently left out of the self-published edition

With an exceptional level of care and attention from Chelsea Green's design team - who told me they felt they were handling a classic - it really has come together beautifully.

Know someone well-known, who could promote David's books?

I've just received physical 'galley copies' (early versions of the books, pre-proofing/indexing, for reviewers etc) of both Lean Logic and Surviving the Future.  This filled me with deep joy!

This week I'm sending these out to high-profile folk to write blurbs and generally shout from the rooftops about these books and David's work.

Do you know anyone I should send them to?  Perhaps Stephen Fry or Russell Brand is a close family friend?!

If so, drop me a line - just hit reply on this email.
An unexpected side effect of my work with Chelsea Green on David's books is that they have offered me a role as their Commissioning Editor for the UK/Europe.

So if you happen to know of any other authors/book projects that deserve a great publisher, let me know!
David Fleming discusses Peak Oil
As a special treat for those who read to the bottom, here's a video that I unearthed of David in his Hampstead flat.
I have also edited out a paperback version - Surviving the Future - in a more conventional read-it-front-to-back format, and at around a quarter of the length.

Click the cover above for more information.  Or to pre-order in the UK, click here.

The idea is that is more accessible, cheaper and a bit less daunting than the full Lean Logic could be to some!  I received the first draft hard copies a couple of days ago and am thrilled at how well it's turned out.

Here's a sneak peek at Rob Hopkins' wonderful Foreword (you're the first to see it, besides me!), the contents list and my editor's preface.

Both books will be published simultaneously in July.

David's work on TEQs still turning heads!

A quick note to let you know that last year myself and two colleagues published a peer-reviewed academic paper on David's work: "Beyond carbon pricing to TEQs – reconciling scientific reality with realpolitik".

It formed part of the Carbon Management journal's special issue on 'Radical Emissions Reductions' and is now comfortably the journal's most-read paper ever, having been downloaded from the journal's website alone over 4,000 times!

Also, thanks to widespread coverage and the efforts of our supporters, Altmetric (who track nearly 5 million academic papers across all academic disciplines) rank it in the top 3% most-discussed papers.

If you are interested in this aspect of David's legacy, you can sign up for TEQs updates (2-3 times a year) here.

Thanks all, for your support and enthusiasm for David's genius!  I see no better way to honour our memories of him than by keeping his work and passion alive in the world, and helping it reach the audience that deserves it!

~ Shaun
"In my words it's half encyclopedia, half commonplace book, half a secular bible, half survival guide, half...  yes, that's a lot of halves, but I hope you get the picture.  I have never encountered a book that is so hard to characterise yet so hard, despite its weight, to put down.

Lean Logic does not sugar-coat the challenges we face: an economy that destroys the very foundations upon which it depends; climate weirdness; ecological systems under stress; shocks to community and culture.  Neither does the book suggest that there are easy solutions to these dilemmas ... But Lean Logic is neither a policy manifesto nor a dry technical guide.  It's an incredibly nourishing cultural and scientific treasure trove."

~ John Thackara, founder/director of Doors of Perception and author of twelve books, including How To Thrive in the Next Economy
