The Spotlight's on Northland

Tena hoki ra koutou nga kai whakahaere o nga pakihi tapoi, koutou e hoatu te manaakitanga ki nga manuhiri o tatou. Tena koutou.

Reports from around the region show the summer peak has been a mixed bag so far, with rain around the New Year period meaning those campers who packed-up early took a lot of potential expenditure with them as they returned home. Activity operators report good numbers early in the period, but with some drop-off later due also to mixed weather. Meanwhile, the release of 2015 annual climate stats in early January showed that Northland was the hottest place in the country for the fourth year in a row, great PR for our region.

We now head into an exciting period for Northland as significant progress is made on two major projects approach. The new Museum of Waitangi opens to the public on 7 February and will add to the base of year-round, all weather experiences on offer in Northland.

The Twin Coast Discovery revamp project has moved along with 17 applications to develop Byway routes received by the end of 2015. Over the coming few months, further work will be undertaken to develop some of these concepts into the first Byways, providing more detailed options for visitors’ journeys through Northland.

Northland operators are stepping up and investing more in marketing the region, with 15 businesses committing to attend the annual TRENZ international buyer-seller exchange to be held in Rotorua in May 2106. That’s up from just 6 in 2015, and shows renewed confidence as international visitor numbers to Northland and New Zealand continue to grow rapidly.

CAM results this month show a continuation of the pattern where the Far North growth rates have pulled along the overall performance of Northland region as a whole.

We've updated our Tactical Marketing Plan which includes our calendar of activity for the next six months.

Until next time,

Commercial Accommodation Monitor (CAM)

November CAM data was released 19th January 2016

Far North continues to drive Northland’s recent growth patterns, while the Whangarei District and Kaipara growth rate has fallen back over the winter and shoulder season months.  In November Northland’s year-end growth dropped just below the national average growth rate, as a result of this pattern change.

TripAdvisor Tips

Are you taking advantage of TripAdvisor's free listings?

Opinion is divided about the world's largest travel site, but people are going to write reviews regardless - good or bad. It's recommended that if you have a listing, you claim it and respond to feedback (if you aren't already), as some 280 million people now use the site to research travel.

73% of travelers voted TripAdvisor ahead of word-of-mouth, content and official hotel ratings as the most influential source of information for vacations.

Visitor Insight by Market

That’s just one of the many things you can learn from the Tourism New Zealand Insights team who have made research easy with infographics showing the demographics and behaviour of international travellers to New Zealand. It’s a great resource.

Kauri Coast Visit

We have resumed our operator visits around the region after a break in December. On the 7th of January we were delighted to be welcomed into the heart of Kauri and Kumara country. The Old Post Office Guest House in Paparoa was our first stop - what a gem. A historic building that has been tastefully decorated and managed. Deb is also one of the business owners who is getting involved in the electric car revolution (read more below).

The Old Post Office Guest House, The Kauri Museum, The Kumara Box, Dargaville Rail & River Tours and Loop de Loop Cycle Hire (in Whangarei).

Next stop was the Kauri Museum where it was great to touch base with Manager Lisa Tolich and see their conferencing facilities. They have some really exciting initiatives in the pipeline. 'Ernie' and Mavis were most hospitable at the Kumara Box, where their show gives a unique insight into the kumara industry. We then met with Dave, John and Elaine from Dargaville Rail and River Tours. This is a really exciting venture for Dargaville, offering an additional reason to visit and extend duration of stay. The converted golf carts are not automated, so you are in charge of controlling the vehicle. All you need is a driver's license and a sense of adventure. Last stop was Bayly's Beach Holiday Park where we met with Trish and had a quick look around. We were most impressed with their quintessential Kiwi baches, which are a hit with visitors.

Whangarei

Paul recently met with Loop de Loop Cycle Hire based at the Town Basin in Whangarei. The Hatea Loop is a 4.5 km shared path that takes you around the harbour, which you can navigate on a series of different options offered by Loop de Loop including scooters, city bikes and e-bikes.

These visits allow us to familiarise ourselves with Northland's visitor offerings and helps us sell Northland as a visitor destination to trade, media, and to create content for internal and external tourism publications and websites.

Northland's Electric Car Revolution

Visitors to Northland now have the option of renting an electric vehicle in Auckland and travelling the Twin Coast Discovery Highway (800 km) for the cost of a few coffees.

Some innovative Northland business owners have taken the opportunity to become part of the 6 Day EV Trail Around Northland offering charge-up's in return for a one night stay, a meal, or around $2 per hour.

Four of New Zealand’s seven fast-charge stations are located in Northland. Being the first region in New Zealand to start a touring route, we'd say we're leading the way again.

If you are considering joining the electric travel revolution, the benefits are:
  • Keeping money in Northland
  • Promoting quiet and clean travel
  • Keeping visitors cost down so they (hopefully) spend more time here

Exposure for Kiwi Conservation and Russell Nature Walks

New footage has revealed how diligent dad kiwi are when raising their chicks. Taken by Russell Nature Walks, it shows male kiwi don't shirk their duties when it comes to parenthood.

Russell Nature Walks offer short, easy guided walks in a Private Forest and Kiwi Conservation Area only 2.5 km from Russell.

A bit of Nostalgia

From The Travel Film Archive, here's a look back at how Northland was portrayed in the 1940s, where "your heart will begin to lift and beat a little faster at these first glimpses of the lovely countryside you are about to travel through..."

  • Northland Region records 1.747m guest nights per year, and by total guest nights ranks 6th in New Zealand (Auckland, Canterbury, Queenstown, Wellington and Rotorua are the only regions which record more nights).

  • The ratio of international to domestic guest nights peaks in February each year at 49:51, and is lowest in June at 34:66.

  • Tourism contributes $575m to the Northland Region’s economy and 3.7% of Northland’s GDP. Domestic visitors spend $390m (68%) and international visitors spend $185m (32%). (YE Dec 2014 – Infometrics, Northland Region Economic Profile)

  • 3,900 people are employed in Tourism in Northland. (YE Dec 2014 – Infometrics, Northland Region Economic Profile)

  • There are an estimated 1,200 tourism–related businesses in Northland.
