The Boswells School welcomes world champion for
Sky Sports Living for Sport project
Students at The Boswells School had the opportunity to work with a two-time World Champion when they took part in another successful Sky Sports Living for Sport project.
In previous years the school has been visited by Olympians Jeannette Kwakye and JJ Jegede, and won a competition to visit the Sky studios for a coaching session with Rugby World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson.
This time the school welcomed two-time world BMX champion Mike Mullen.
For the first of two visits, Mike worked through Sky’s six Keys to Success with 24 Year 7, 8 and 9 boys with a practical session in his specialist sport.
The students worked through a variety of fun BMX-based activities such as jumps, relays and BMX Sumo, with a focus of not only developing their own skills for their own aspirations but in giving something back to the school by developing aspects needed to be an effective sports leader in conjunction with the school's Young Leaders programme.
After a morning of practical activities it was outside for a session which saw students get stuck into a range of activities that made then consider their own role in sport and their own sporting development, all while doing something they wouldn’t normally get the chance to do in school.
The second visit, a Loyalty visit for the school following previously successful programmes, saw Mike work with 24 of The Boswells School's potential ‘Young Leader’ girls as they ran through the 6 Keys to Success, again taking part in fun games and activities to encourage them to think about ways in which they can further develop their own skill set.
PE teacher Callum Ridgway said: "This is the sixth occasion we’ve worked with Sky on the Sky Sports Living for Sport project and the first time we’ve worked with Mike.
"Sky has over 100 athlete mentors on their programme and Mike is one of the 13 senior athlete mentors which indicates how highly his sessions are thought of.
"The theory and practical elements were absolutely brilliant and really encourage the students to think about their own sporting profile in a much wider context. And it’s not every day the students get to take part in BMXing in school with a former world champion so they really appreciated getting to do something a bit different."
Mike will be the guest speaker at the school's Sports Awards evening in July.
Future Sky Sports Living for Sport projects are already being set up for another group of students.
