Some snippets for this month in the garden
What to plant
In the Western Cape, plant wind-resistant plants like lavender, lamb’s ear and woolly thyme. These plants cope well in dry, windy weather.
What to sow
In the Free State, you can start sowing those winter and spring-flowering jewels, which need a bit of time to grow up in seedling trays – pansies, cinerarias, gazanias, Iceland poppies and primulas.
What to feed
In the North West, feed and water azaleas, helleborus, and camellias to prevent bud drop.
What to spray
In Limpopo, check for red spider on roses, normally found on the underside of the leaf. Pick off all leaves that are badly infected and spray the plant with a recommended insecticide.
What to prune
In Gauteng, prune summer-flowering plants like hydrangeas, pelargoniums, lavender, abelia, weigela, heliotrope and salvia.
