Making Scotland a Nation of Debt Justice in 2016

Hello campaigners!

Welcome to a new year of debt justice campaigning. 2015 was a year of summits from the Sustainable Development Goals and Financing for Development to the most recent climate change conference in Paris. A year of planning and pledges.

In 2016 we must focus on action, on justice and on debt.

The Sustainable Development Goals are an opportunity to put debt justice at the heart of development discussions once again. A sustainable and people oriented financial system is essential to addressing poverty, food and water crises, and climate change. To create a new financial system we must deal with cycles of unjust and unsustainable debt.

Ghana was one of the first countries to qualify for debt relief through the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative. Last year it was forced to spend 35% of government revenues last year on foreign debt payments. That is not sustainable development and falling commodity prices and the recent increase in US interest rates will not improve the situation.

Call for MSPs to Divest from Arms, Fossil Fuels and Tobacco
Together with Campaign Against the Arms Trade Edinburgh and Friends of the Earth Scotland we are calling for MSPs to divest their pensions from the arms, fossil fuel and tobacco companies. Arms sales are closely linked to unjust debt. 75% of Indonesia's debt to the UK is for arms sales, some of which President Suharto used to suppress his own people. The Scottish government has shown strong leadership internationally by being one of the first to sign up to the Sustainable Development Goals but we must make sure it puts its money where its mouth is and divests from irresponsible corporations.
