Hello campaigners!
Welcome to a new year of debt justice campaigning. 2015 was a year of summits from the Sustainable Development Goals and Financing for Development to the most recent climate change conference in Paris. A year of planning and pledges.
In 2016 we must focus on action, on justice and on debt.
The Sustainable Development Goals are an opportunity to put debt justice at the heart of development discussions once again. A sustainable and people oriented financial system is essential to addressing poverty, food and water crises, and climate change. To create a new financial system we must deal with cycles of unjust and unsustainable debt.
Ghana was one of the first countries to qualify for debt relief through the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative. Last year it was forced to spend 35% of government revenues last year on foreign debt payments. That is not sustainable development and falling commodity prices and the recent increase in US interest rates will not improve the situation.
