Oregon Specialty Crop Block Grant Program

The Oregon Department of Agriculture accepts competitive applications for specialty crop grant funds annually. Non-profit organizations, local government entities, for-profit organizations, industry trade associations, producer groups, commodity commissions, and public and private colleges/universities are eligible to apply for projects that enhance the competitiveness of Oregon's specialty crops. Concept proposals are due February 23, 2016.

Dry Farming Project Update

The Dry Farming Project will be expanding over the next couple of years due to grower interest throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Here is a look at what is coming up this year!:
  • Growing Resilience: Water Management Workshop Series (funded by Westsern SARE) will include multiple workshops on water conservation, catchment and storage, and strategies for growing with little or no irrigation.
  • Dry Farming Demonstration - Will expand in 2016! There will be a dry farming demo in Corvallis at the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture, in Aurora at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center, and in Central Point at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center
  • Participatory Dry Farming Research – Growers throughout the Pacific Northwest have been contacting us and are interested in learning more about dry farming and hosting trials on their farm. We are excited to be taking a participatory approach with this research and create a collaborative learning environment.
Please contact Amy Garrett if you are interested in hosting a dry farming trial on your farm.

We have two programs with 2016 openings.
FarmsNext is a full season entry-level residential internship program that combines hands-on training and skills-based education in sustainable agriculture. As a student intern, you will live and work full-time on a host farm, receiving up to 1,500 hours of on-farm training and learning in-depth skills from your mentor.

The FarmsNOW apprenticeship program is for those with some farm experience who are seeking mastery in the art and business of sustainable agriculture. Hands-on training, classes, seminars, and guidance on farm business development will help you gain the skills to plan, design, and run integrated farming systems on your own.

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) detected in Oregon

The Oregon Department of Agriculture has confirmed that a case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) has been detected on a farm located in Clackamas County.  The disease was confirmed Friday January 8, 2016 by PCR testing conducted at Oregon State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. PEDv is a viral disease that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting in pigs. The virus largely affects young piglets and has a mortality rate as high as 100 percent. While the disease is deadly in pigs, it is not transmissible to other species of animals or to humans and does not affect food safety.  Learn more: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/polk/porcine-epidemic-diarrhea-virus-pedv-detected-oregon
