NorthernConnect gives NCTC students a direct pathway to Bemidji State
Bemidji State University and Northland Community & Technical College have created a dual admissions program, NorthernConnect, which allows students who complete associate’s degrees at the college to transfer and continue their educations barrier-free at Bemidji State.

ITS expanding use of MnSCU's StarID beginning in March
As part of an initiative to improve the security of the university's electronic services and to streamline login procedures across a variety of services, Bemidji State's Information Technology Services will be rolling out expanded use of the StarID system beginning in March. BSU's use of StarID, a central login service provided by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, will be expanded to include campus Wi-Fi, computers, email and most other ITS services and applications, such as MyBSU. MnSCU releases first Charting the Future quarterly report
On Jan. 7, presidents and vice chancellors from across the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system presented the first quarterly report on the progress of a work plan undertaken as part of the Charting the Future initiative. The report recaps work done during the first three months Charting the Future's implementation, from October-December 2015. It includes updates on the implementation of two dozen separate initiatives, such as curriculum alignment, strengthening academic advising and ensuring affordability. The quarterly report, and an extensive appendix with additional information, is available on the Charting the Future blog.

Memorial Hall renovation headlines fall/winter edition of Bemidji State University magazine
The fall/winter 2015 edition of Bemidji State University magazine highlights the success of the Imagine Tomorrow campaign, which has eclipsed its goal of $35 million and forever changed the future of the university. In addition, it showcases the renovation of Memorial Hall into a shining new home for our business and accounting programs. Other stories include a feature on several families whose deep ties to BSU have been passed from generation to generation, and a profile of an alumnus who has dedicated his life to protecting the environment from oil spills.

Champlin couple are BSU's 2016 Distinguished Minnesotans
Retired biology teachers Dr. Darby and Geri Nelson will be recognized as the recipients of Bemidji State's Outstanding Minnesotan award during Commencement on May 6. In addition to a broad range of philanthropic activities that includes gifts to The Nature Conservancy, the University of Minnesota, the League of Women Voters and Anoka-Ramsey Community College, the Nelsons have created the Helping Hands (Naadamaageng) Student Assistance Fund, which is intended to help American Indian students at Bemidji State overcome financial obstacles and remain in school. The Nelsons were featured in the Summer 2015 edition of Bemidji State University Magazine.

Memorial Hall receives finishing touches
The Memorial Hall renovation project is nearing completion. The Central Plaza area between Memorial and Sattgast halls, including the stairs that connect the plaza to the sidewalks behind Deputy Hall, is open, and the new atrium entrance to Memorial Hall should be completed and open within the next few weeks.

Dayton jobs bill includes $12M for Academic Learning Center
Gov. Mark Dayton's Jobs Bill, introduced on Jan. 15, included just over $12 million for Bemidji State's proposed replacement of Hagg-Sauer Hall. The project calls for the demolition of the current building, which would be replaced by a new Academic Learning Center that would continue to bear the Hagg-Sauer name. In addition, BSU plans to refresh or renovate space in nearly all other buildings on campus. The Minnesota Legislature will consider the governor's bill when it convenes for its 2016 session on March 8.

Imagine Tomorrow campaign continues to raise the bar
Bemidji State's Imagine Tomorrow fundraising campaign surpassed its initial goal of $35 million in November, but the five-year effort will continue to seek additional participation until it concludes on June 30.
In March, the BSU Foundation will again reach out to employees with information about how to participate, including a $25,000 matching gift for annual contributions to the Lakeside Fund. Multi-year pledges made by June will also count toward the campaign total. Lisa Hofstad, the foundation's director of annual giving, said she is planning a celebration/appreciation event in April for faculty and staff who have been part of Imagine Tomorrow's success so far. As of last year, 53 percent of all faculty and staff were participating.
On March 1, the foundation will kick off a “March to the Finish†mini-campaign for Imagine Tomorrow that includes a crowdfunding/social media component particularly aimed at young alumni. Hofstad said she is still seeking suggestions for outstanding students to be highlighted during "March to the Finish" and in other campaign materials.

BSU hosting Feb. 16 listening session on EPA Clean Power Plan
Bemidji State is hosting the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for a Feb. 16 listening session, where it will solicit feedback on how to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Power Plan. It is one of a series of four MPCA listening sessions across the state to discuss the EPA plan which aims to reduce carbon pollution from power plants. The meeting and listening session will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. in the American Indian Resource Center's Great Room, with a one-hour open house beforehand. MPCA officials will be available for conversation afterward.

BSU hosting EdCamp education conference on Feb. 27
For the third consecutive year, Bemidji State will host EdCamp Bemidji, a free one-day, participant-driven conference for educators. The "unconference" format is designed to let teachers have control over their own professional development. Rather than paying presenters, conference attendees learn from and teach each other. Registration for the conference, which will take place in Hagg-Sauer Hall, is now open.

Football and soccer announce 2016 signing classes
Recruiting season for Bemidji State's football and soccer programs culminates today, when dozens of student-athletes will officially join Beaver Nation on National Signing Day. Head soccer coach Jim Stone and head football coach Jeff Tesch will discuss their signing classes at a 3:30 p.m. press conference in room 230 of BSU's Physical Education Complex. The athletic media relations staff will provide live coverage of the press conference, along with updates throughout the day as National Letters of Intent are received, at BSUBeavers.com.
