Hello Fellow Michigan Jaycees,

It is hard to believe we are through one month of 2016 already.  The first month of the year is one that is action-packed full of planning and prepartion.  I hear your local boards of directors are putting together great plans for 2016.  Looking ahead, I encourage you to personally ask yourself if you are making an impact in your community?  My hope is that the answer to that question is yes.  I challenge each of us to take our plans and put them into action working individually as well as collectively as Jaycees.

I am happy to see the great impact our chapters have made in their communities in the past year, and now into this first part of the new year.  One of the areas our organization can make great contributions will be with efforts to ease the affects of the Flint Water Crisis.  I'm happy to see that there has been great partnership and collaboration across our state and other Jaycee states.  Please keep up the great ideas and work to positively impact our fellow citizens.

The first month of the year was a busy one for me, with a great amount of travel.  I enjoyed visiting 1/2 of our chapters in the month of January, my plan is to be able to get out to the other 1/2 of chapters in February.  I look forward to seeing or meeting you soon, either at the Leadership Conference in Grand Rapids or in your local communities.  Keep up the great work, and make sure that as you continue to impact your communities that you Ignite Your Passion along the way.

In Jaycees,
Steven G. Pickelmann
92nd President
Michigan Junior Chamber

Chief of Staff Melissa Greko

One month down, there is no turning back! Your new leadership is up and running, your chapter is already putting plans in place for your signature projects, socials, recruitment & activation for the year. What are you doing to help?

It’s always a unique experience seeing the transition from one year to the next. To be an organization of choice for young people today, you need to actively be a part of it. We all have varying levels of how we can do that. Throughout our lives those levels will change – mine certainly have fluxuated. Sometimes we can give more, sometimes we can give less. The point is we never stop giving – our time, our talent or our treasure.

I’m excited to celebrate all our time, talent & treasure from this past year, and see new and familiar faces in my home town of Grand Rapids at the February Year End Conference! Don’t forget support your Jaycees by sporting exclusive Michigan Junior Chamber gear! Check out our pride shop and get your items today! http://jayceesmiprideshop.logoshop.com/

Training Director - Stephanie Gerds

Hello Michigan Jaycees!

Regular registration for Year End Conference may have ended, but there is still time to late register and take advantages of the training sessions at conference!

Still haven't decided which training sessions to attend? Here are the sessions offered:

Training Session 1:

"Focus and Breakthrough" a President's Training with MIJC 92nd President Steve Pickelmann and 2016 Presidents Coach Steve Fappas - There will be demonstrations on the power of focus as well as interactive training on breaking through barriers. Other topics will include getting the most out of Conference, Presidents remarks, and an in depth question and answer period.

"Self Defense, Be the One That Gets Away!" with Jennifer Mansfield - Learn how to protect yourself before and after you are approached by a “bad guy.”  This will be an introduction to self-defense and will be a hands on program.  Gentleman, this is not just for the ladies!

"Making The Most of Your Year as VP Through JCI Tools with VP Erin Poltorak and the 2016 Programming Team - There is an abundance of JCI Tools available to you and your chapter. We will discuss where they are, what they do and how you can utilize them to make the most of your year. Tools we will discuss are the Active Citizens Framework, Trainings, National Programs, etc. You should attend as a VP or as a member interested in learning more about JCI tools available for your sucess and development.

Training Session 2:

"How To Make The Most Out of Your Membership" with Membership Director Michelle Kelley and the 2016 District Director Team - Do you have questions like: What's a PMG? What's this passport thing I've heard people speak of? I want to share and get more young people involved, how do I do that? How do I help other members become active and involved? Your 2016 Membership team will give you the answers and show you the tools to become the best Jaycee you can be. Bring your questions, and project ideas as there will be time for us to bounce ideas off one another too.

"Standing Out in 6 Seconds: Resume Writing" with Kristin Garskta - Did you know that it takes HR just 6 seconds to scan your resume and determine if you are worth a deeper look?  That may sound shocking, but take it from an HR professional, it's true! Do you ever wonder how people make it to the next round?  In this training, learn how to make an impression and jump in front of other candidates! Be sure to bring your current resume to make real-time modifications.

"Strategic Marketing for Non-Profits and Small Businesses" with Reagan Marketing - Join representatives from Reagan Marketing as they present on Strategic Marketing for Non-Profits and Small Businesses. This presentation will cover an overview of traditional marketing- what tools are effective, including search engine optimization and marketing as well as a discussion on social media, content marketing and search engine optimization in today's digital world.

Training Session 3:
"Model Legislature Informational Session" with Heather Harris and Anna Versalle - This informational session provides an opportunity to go over how Model Legislature is run. Topics to be covered include how to read a bill, basic parliamentary procedure, and selection of Party Leaders. Members who attend the info session will receive a discount code off of registration.

District 4 Director James Hart

Hello fellow Jaycees!

Being a Jaycee is no simple task. If it were, everyone would do it. With that said, there are a lot of people out there who simply do not know about this organization and that is unfortunate. I am one of those that didn’t find the Jaycees until well into my 30’s and it took two years before I became more involved. I think when we look into ourselves, it is not hard to find some answers to our membership decline in the younger segment. We aren’t showing the value proposition.

This is an organization that offers social outlets, opportunity for professional development, and effective networking. Working hard to address each need individually, as opposed to picking one or the other can be the key. It will be exciting to see how this year's crop of new leaders will help usher in a new mindset and focus on these core areas. With value, comes interest. With interest, comes growth.

Another often overlooked benefit is our influence in this organization. While some chapters may only have 20 or so members, their loud and respected voice within their community is very much present. On the district levels, we have hundreds of young active citizens who command an audience and can accomplish amazing things when working together. Collectively, we are also ALL Michigan Jaycees. An organization of nearly 1000 members who can make a very loud statement and impact when we work together.

As we all continue our planning for 2016, let's address some big problems together and use some critical thinking to make some big impact! We are plenty big enough to not only give a man a fish, but to teach him how to fish as well.
