Maggie Yang
Business Major
Class of 2016

What sparked your interest in accounting?
I found my introduction to financial accounting course to be engaging and interesting, so I started to look into the profession. The professional panel that spoke to our class further sparked my interest in accounting because I learned that my previous misconception that accounts are just introverted people who work with numbers all day is not true. In fact, the professionals who spoke on the panel were personable and had a fantastic, albeit nerdy, sense of humor and emphasized the importance of communication and building relationships in the accounting profession.

What are you doing to prepare for the CPA exam?
I am studying via Becker. I'm also a Haas tutor so I've been refreshing my own knowledge by tutoring students in accounting.

What advice do you have for other students considering a career in accounting?
Be proactive and take initiative in reaching out to professionals. They may seem intimidating, but they were in your shoes at one point and they understand what you're going through. I found mentors and formed strong friendships through the recruiting process, so I really encourage all students to take advantage of every opportunity to meet people and build an expansive network.
