Greetings!

2016 is shaping up to be a big year for Placemaking, and we begin it with over 1000 members worldwide.
The end of the year came with that exciting membership milestone for the PLC! With a critical mass in many cities and countries, we’re increasingly focusing on spurring local action. In the coming weeks and months, look out for announcements of topic-oriented gatherings or community campaigns in your region. If you are interested in hosting an event, please let us know.

Let's meet in Vancouver!
For a week this September (11-17), the world's leading Place advocates, practitioners, and policymakers will converge in Vancouver for an intertwined series of gatherings around Placemaking, transportation, and the shaping of cities. PLC members are expected to attend — and right now, members have the opportunity to shape the anchor events.

2016 PLC Global Convening

For the first time since Pittsburgh in 2014, the PLC will host a gathering of members from around the world! The previous meetings established Placemaking as a worldwide movement. With the movement firmly rooted and growing, this conference aims to dive further into the most critical issues of place—building campaigns, linking new global agendas, and enhancing the practice of Placemaking.

Since the PLC is a collective body, we want the membership to shape the content and framework for this meeting. Which topics are you most passionate about, and feel you could contribute most to the dialogue? Let us know by completing the following brief survey:

Pro Walk / Pro Bike / Pro Place

Join us September 12-15, 2016, for the biennial Pro Walk/ Pro Bike/ Pro Place (PWPBPP) conference, focused on making urban environments more walkable, bikable, and people-oriented. We have a lot to learn from Vancouver, a far-sighted municipality that has long eschewed auto-oriented design to become one of the most livable cities in the world!

The theme this year is “Moving Towards a Healthier World,” and sessions will fall under the categories Mobility, Governance, Health, and Resilience.

Stay tuned for more details about all the exciting gatherings coming later this year.

2015 saw the launch of the Creative Placemaking Resource Team. We are working to build a robust collection of best practices and case studies, and will have much more to come in 2016.

Funding Placemaking

The Placemaking Funder’s Forum—a group of foundations, corporations, and government agencies from across the US and Canada—met for a second time to further establish Placemaking as a philanthropic cause, while exploring ways to better coordinate and leverage each other's placemaking investments. The Forum (a program of the PLC) is generously supported by the Kresge Foundation. This year’s conversations spanned a range of topics essential to the Placemaking movement, from messaging and metrics to capacity building and community empowerment.

The Bass Initiative on Innovation and Placemaking: What it Means for the PLC

In October, PPS announced a pioneering partnership with the Brookings Institution: the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Initiative on Innovation and Placemaking. Brookings, one of the world’s most respected think tanks, has been investigating the emerging shift in the location of tech innovation from suburban office parks (like Silicon Valley) to urban clusters. Building on this body of research, the Bass Initiative will take a broader look at the connection between Place and innovation, including the characteristics of great places that breed the creativity—scientific, artistic, entrepreneurial, and otherwise—driving urban, cultural, and economic development in the 21st century.

This is a major opportunity for the Placemaking movement. With its highly respected analytical resources and influence, we’re excited to see what the Brookings Institution can contribute to the field. For PLC members, this means important new insight to improve your Placemaking practice and advocacy. We also hope to incorporate PLC member organizations in the studies themselves, when possible, with the results available to all. You can learn more about the Bass Initiative here.
Let's turn everything up-side-down, to get it right-side-up.

Sincerely,

Fred Kent, President
