Happy New Year! In this issue, check out our Oscar predictions, our top picks for animated movies this year and some thoughts on what lies ahead in 2016. Happy reading and thanks for your continued support.
Sixteen features have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 88th Academy Awards® and they are all stunning in their own way. While every nominated film is worth a watch, we polled Atomic Cartoons for our animated favourites here:

Top Picks for Best Animated Feature:
Inside Out
Shaun the Sheep Movie

Anomalisa
Top Picks for Best Animated Short:
Sanjay's Super Team
World of Tomorrow
We Can't Live Without Cosmos

Although Pixar's Inside Out is expected to win the Oscar, the stop-motion animated adventure comedy film - Shaun the Sheep - is a fan favourite  and a close contender for the award. Based on the television series, the film follows Shaun and his flock into the big city to rescue their farmer, who found himself there as a result of their mischief. The film has no dialogue resulting in a very humorous and creative movie that's great for the entire family.

The 88th Oscars® will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016 - Don't miss them (we won't!).
State of the Anim-a-Nation

We asked Rob Simmons, Director of Finance and Business affairs at Atomic Cartoons to breakdown what is happening in the animation industry and this is what he had to say.
In the last couple of years some of the challenges facing our industry include the consolidation of our Canadian broadcast industry in the kids space, technology changes that have allowed digital streaming providers (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu) to create a significant presence and better tech tools to create eye popping animation. Other uncontrollable changes are economic, foreign exchange volatility, consolidation in broadcasting, and restructuring in local studio ownership.
In spite of the challenges in our industry we at Atomic do have reason to be optimistic about the future in BC:
  • Animation has grown up along with the rest of the film and television industry. It’s significant, mature and important and recognized worldwide for its vibrancy.
  • A thoughtful, stable and supportive set of public policy. Our governments have repeatedly seen the importance of nurturing the industry, and I see increasing signs that policy makers “get” our industry. There will be lots of opportunity to get engaged with government in the next couple of years; our job is to educate policy makers affecting our industry.
  • Educational institutions with animation specific programs. In BC, we have both public and private institutions that have dedicated animation programs. While they have not kept up with recent demand, I do expect to see that change in the next year or two.

Watch Atomic Cartoons first Holiday Anijam on YouTube
Twenty-five Atomic crew participated in creating their first collaborative animation project called an AniJam which debuted at the 2015 Holiday Party. The challenge was to create a chase sequence with two characters through all kinds of animation mediums to tell a story, set to the theme song of Mission Impossible.  Artists created individual 5-15 second pieces of 2D and 3D animation, stop-motion, puppetry, and even a real live cat to create the AniJam featuring Sparky from Atomic Betty and an orange cat. The result is a fast-paced selection of talent and imagination - watch it for yourself.
Tyler Hoolaeff receiving the highly sought after 'Atomic' jacket at the Atomic Holiday Party as well as being crowned Crew of the Month.
Tyler Hoolaeff not just Crew of the Month! Originally from Penticton BC, Tyler has been working in the Vancouver animation industry since 2003.  Tyler was one of the founding artists on Little Charmers and helped to create the production pipeline while also helping to  hire and train the more than 30 animators that worked on the show.
What do you do at Atomic? I'm an Animation Supervisor
Explain your daily work day...I check shots, solve problems, and prepare for upcoming episodes while my awesome teams make the shows come to life.
How long have been at Atomic? 2.5 years
How did you get into animation? I always enjoyed art classes in school and in my senior year there was one computer that had 3ds max on it and I was able to get a class on that. No one knew how to use the software though so I bumbled around on it enough to know that I wanted to learn more and went to college once I graduated.
What Post-Secondary School did you go to? I first went to a community college in Kelowna because it was close to home. They were offering a 2D/3D program and I got a nice 2D education there. My first character animation job was at Bardel. After that I went to CDIS which is now the Art Institute. It turned out to be a great choice, a lot of my classmates are still some of my best friends and very successful in the industry.
Where are the other grads from your class working? Where aren't they working is the shorter list, I don't think any of them have worked for NASA.
Tips for Future Animators? #1 Hire me for it please :) #2 Clarify goals early:) #3 Initiate a team work relationship between client and studio.
Favourite things to do in Vancouver? I like to walk places, I'm fortunate to live close to work and enjoy my short walking commute. I try and do errands on foot whenever possible because traffic and parking are a bummer. Oh and I ❤ cartoons, I should probably watch less TV but it's research right?
