Volunteers Needed for WHS Phonathon to Raise Money for Hospice Care

Every year the Washington Health System Foundation holds its Spring Phonathon in March to raise money for Washington Health System Hospice Care and Donnell House. They hold both a Spring and Fall Phonathon fundraiser to ask past donors and family members to support current and future hospice patients. Calvary volunteered two years ago on the night of Tuesday, March 18th, 2014. The volunteers were able to raise $2,300.00 that night for the fundraiser.

This year, Calvary UMC has been asked to volunteer on the night of Thursday, March 31st. They will offer a free dinner at 5:30pm followed by an orientation at 6:00pm. Calling is from 6:30-8:30pm. These won’t be “cold calls.” No experience is necessary. The orientation will cover everything you will need to know. Please see Kenny Elliott for further details or if you are interested in volunteering.

History of Donnell House
When Shana Donnell’s father, Robert McCabe, was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she and her husband, Richard, had to make the difficult decision of how to manage his care. An oncologist at the hospital in Ohio recommended a local hospice program. They didn’t know at the time, but that decision would change all of their lives. Mr. McCabe was able to live out his final days in a peaceful home-like environment, surrounded by his family. The Donnell’s positive experience led them to Washington Health System Washington Hospital. With the help of the Donnell’s generous contribution, The Donnell House was built so that people in southwestern Pennsylvania could have access to a hospice program similar to the one in Ohio.

Here are some pictures from when we volunteered in 2014. It was a lovely evening spending time together in support of such a great cause!

Enjoy Singing? We have a place for you!!

Health Kits for UMCOR

As Lent arrives, the Mission Committee challenges you!  We challenge to assemble one or more of the UMCOR Relief Supply kits. These kits are stored at the Mission Barn so that they are immediately available for distribution in emergencies.  We will collect kits until Annual Conference in June. Directions for the kits can be found at http://www.umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies. We are especially need School, Sewing, and Health Kits. Bring your kits to church and we will take them to the Barn.

The Daily Bread Is In Need of Winter Clothing

The Daily Bread at New Hope is in need of winter clothing for those that they provide meals to. If you have a winter coat that you don’t use, please bring it in to Calvary so that it can be given to someone in need of its warmth. Also, there is a need for socks, gloves, hats, boxer shorts, and t-shirts (sizes large and XL). Any donations are greatly appreciated. See Doug Lucas or call the church office for details.

WANTED: CROCHETERS
Crocheted Sleep Mats for the Homeless

Joan Bradley

The group that makes the quilts for the homeless is looking for persons who are able to crochet. There are directions for using the plastic grocery bags to crochet a plastic mat which keeps the quilts off the ground keeping the quilt drier.  There are already rolls of “plastic yarn” ready to be used and needles are available. If you can crochet or want to learn please contact Joan Bradley. We would love to give a plastic mat with every quilt but are in desperate need of persons who crochet.

Instructions on How to Make the Sleep Mats

You will need approximately 500 plastic grocery bags for each mat.
You will need a crochet hook, size M or larger.
Finished size is 24 X 72 inches.

TO MAKE THE “YARN” smooth out the grocery bag, fold it in half lengthwise twice
and cut off seamed bottom and top handles/hanging tabs. Fold in half and cut across,
repeat. This will give you 4 loops. Take a loop and insert another loop, then bring the
rest through to attach (remember how you strung rubber bands together as a child?).
Repeat then wind your “string” of connected loops into a ball. Don’t make the ball too
big to handle. I usually work with one full bag of grocery bags and make three or four
balls out of it then repeat until I run out of bags.

TO MAKE THE MAT chain 72 inches using the doubled looped strands of grocery bags.
Single crochet until the mat is 24 inches wide.

TO MAKE A CARRYING STRAP chain a length long enough to go around the rolled
mat and slide on, connect that chain into a loop with a single crochet then chain a length
long enough to cross your back, go over your shoulder and reach the other end of the mat.
Chain an additional length equal to the first loop and attach with a single crochet.

YOUR SLEEPING MAT IS NOW READY TO GIVE AWAY. YouTube videos are
online for viewing. Just google “sleeping mats for the homeless”.

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

"Feed the Sheep" Fellowship Luncheons

“If you love me, feed my sheep.”
- John 21:15-19

We are in need of sponsors for January.

For only $70 you, or a group, can provide a light lunch to the people you worship with. Sponsors are responsible for serving the meal and cleaning up the Fellowship Hall and kitchen once the meal is over. The total sponsorship cost is $70. A group can divide the cost among themselves anyway they choose.

If you, or a group, would like to sponsor a fellowship luncheon, the below forms are available next to the Sunday bulletin for you to fill out. Once you have completed the reverse side of the form with all of the required information, please place the form along with the $70 in an offering envelope. You can then place the envelope in the offering plate.

You can also email the required information on the below form to calvaryumcpgh@gmail.com and instructions on sponsorship payment will be emailed to you.

Once the church office receives your sponsorship form, either Doug Lucas or Mike Schnitgen will then contact you with the date of the Sunday that you or your group are to sponsor. Special dietary requests can be discussed at that time.
