Storage Management Initiative Gears up for 2016 Plugfests

On the heels of their successful events last year, the Storage Management Initiative (SMI) has announced the schedule of SMI-Lab plugfests for 2016 to facilitate face-to-face interoperability testing for SMI member companies. These collaborative events help ensure members that their own products operate reliably when deployed to customers as multivendor solutions.

“Microsoft supports SMI-S in Windows Server and System Center to promote interoperability with many storage devices deployed by our customers. The SMI-Lab plugfest provides multiple opportunities throughout the year to work directly with member companies developing SMI-S provider implementations. Plugfests are an important way for Microsoft and its partners to work together to deliver the best product integration,” said Hector Linares, SMI member and a Cloud and Enterprise Principal Program Manager for Microsoft. “One week at a plugfest face-to-face is a brilliant way to shorten development time and replace weeks of e-mail discussions and conference calls.”

The next plugfest will be hosted by Huawei, co-located in Santa Clara, Calif. and ChengDu, China, February 22-25.  For all 2016 plugfest dates and locations, visit the SMI-Lab events schedule

SNIA 4th Annual NVM Summit a Rousing Success

The recent SNIA Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) Summit delivered on the reality of the convergence of storage and memory, brought to life by the enormous capacity, memory-like speed, and non-volatility of persistent memory. The day's focus was on developing the needed ecosystem for this convergence. Fourteen sessions from industry leaders at ABR, Avalanche, Everspin, Coughlin Associates, Global Foundries, HGST, HP, Intel, Mellanox, Microsoft, Objective Analysis, Plexistor, PMC Sierra, Red Hat. SMART Modular, Supermicro, Trendfocus, and UC Santa Cruz gave insights into today's opportunities and an exciting future. Many thanks to Intel Corporation and the SNIA Solid State Storage Initiative for their underwriting of the day's activities, and a special nod to members AgigA Tech, Diablo Technologies, Netlist, and SMART Modular of the SNIA NVDIMM Special Interest Group for their demonstrations of NVDIMM solutions.

All presentations from the NVM Storage Industry Summit are now available for download.

Speaking Opportunity

Speak at SNIA's Data Storage Innovation Conference (DSI) – Deadline February 5th

Taking place in San Mateo on June 13-15, DSI will provide insights into new technology areas such as software–defined storage, cloud, big data, cold storage, and persistent memory, along with many other aspects of data management and network–connected storage.

SNIA is looking for the latest in actual deployment blueprints, ground-breaking implementations, real world case studies, and best practices. Submit a proposal to speak here. The deadline is February 5th
Tech Updates

Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI) Conformance Test Program Now Available

The SNIA Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI) is an ISO/IEC standard that enables cloud solution vendors to meet the growing need for interoperability of data stored in the cloud. Conformance testing for the CDMI specification is now available through the CDMI Conformance Test Program (CTP). The CDMI CTP validates a cloud product’s conformance to the CDMI standard and offers assurance that the standard has been properly implemented and that data stored will be transportable to any other conformant implementation.

SNIA has collaborated with Tata Consultancy Services to provide comprehensive testing to ensure CDMI conformance. Learn how you can get started with CDMI testing today.
Upcoming Webcasts

Storage Performance Benchmarking: Block Components
March 8, 2016
Ken Cantrell, Manager Performance Engineering, NetApp
Mark Rogov, Advisory Systems Engineer, EMC
David Fair, Chair, SNIA-Ethernet Storage Forum, Intel

The third installment of SNIA’s performance benchmarking Webcast series, “Storage Performance Benchmarking: Block Components” aims to continue educating anyone untrained in the storage performance arts to ascend to a common base with the experts. You will gain an understanding of the block components of modern storage arrays and learn storage block terminology.

Exploring the Software Defined Data Center
March 15, 2016
Eric Slack, Sr. Analyst, Evaluator Group
Alex McDonald, Chair SNIA’s Cloud Storage Initiative
Glyn Bowden, SNIA Cloud Storage Board, HPE

A Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) is a compute facility in which all elements of the infrastructure - networking, storage, CPU and security - are virtualized and removed from proprietary hardware stacks. Deployment, provisioning and configuration as well as the operation, monitoring and automation of the entire environment is abstracted from hardware and implemented in software.

If you’re interested in Software-Defined Data Centers and how such a thing might be implemented – and why this concept is important to IT professionals who aren’t involved with building data centers - then please join Eric Slack, Sr. Analyst with Evaluator Group who will explain what “software-defined” really means and why it’s important to all IT organizations, and Alex McDonald, Chair of SNIA’s Cloud Storage Initiative who will discuss how these concepts apply to the modern data center.

What is NFS: An NFS Primer
March 23, 2016
Alex McDonald, Vice Chair, SNIA Ethernet Storage Forum, NetApp
Chad Hintz, SNIA Ethernet Storage Forum Board Member, Cisco

The popular & ubiquitous Network File System (NFS) is a service that allows applications to store and manage data on a remote computer or server. NFS provides two services; a network part that connects users or clients to a remote system or server; and a file-based view of the data. Together these provide a seamless environment that masks the differences between local files and remote files. This Webcast is an introduction and overview presentation to NFS for technologists & tech managers interested in understanding:

  • NFS history and development
  • The facilities and services NFS provides
  • Why NFS rose in popularity to dominate file based services
  • Why NFS continues to be important in the cloud
New Task Force

SNIA OpenStack Storage Initiative Formation

Join the SNIA OpenStack task force in exploring the launch of a new SNIA Initiative to focus on ways SNIA can work together with the OpenStack community. This Initiative is open to current and new SNIA members.

With many existing SNIA standards like CDMI and SMI–S applicable to cloud infrastructure, the subject of this call will be to discuss how to promote SNIA’s standards to the OpenStack developer and end user communities. This call is open to all colleagues in the industry, and will also include a discussion of the mission and objectives of the proposed new Initiative.

The call will be on Tuesday February 16th at 7am PT
