Paintings by Jonathan Gleed

I never wait for inspiration to hit me before I get to work in the morning. I would be waiting for a long time if I only painted when I felt like it. Most of the time I don't want to put on my painting clothes, fire up the studio heater and pick up the brush. Much of the time, I'm fighting procrastination and find myself far too open to distractions. There's always an article on Reddit that I simply must read or a window of perfect weather that I really should enjoy while I can. The world is full of distractions that could easily pull me away from my work if I didn't have a daily routine to keep me on track.

It's not to say I don't feel inspiration from painting, but that feeling really only comes after a long day of hard work. I feel lifted and grateful for the day and for what I have created in front of me. That feeling is usually the only thing I need at the start of a day to remind me why I must get to work.

Strangely, taking a day off is rarely rewarding. I get antsy, restless and feel unfulfilled. And in turn when the next morning arrives, it becomes that much more difficult to get started.

Inspiration is not something I wait for like a sailor waiting for a gust of wind. It's something I have to create internally like working a steam train. It is the stoking and feeding of the glowing coals that power the train of creativity. The harder I work, the more I feel energized from inspiration.
