Linda Liukas: Hello Ruby - out on the market to bring you happy and whimsical moments with coding
The year was 2011 when Linda Liukas, recently graduated from Aalto University won a Women in Tech Award handed out by Aalto University, the Finnish N-PoC of ECWT for co-founding in November 2010 Rails Girls, an open source non-profit model based programming and community to help girls to discover the joy of coding.
The year after ECWT decided to further promote Linda through including her in the women in tech workshop of the final conference of e-skills Week 2012 in Copenhagen. And the rest is history!
Rails Girls, has become a worldwide movement encouraging women to try app building and programming and go from online consumers to web creators. Since that first event in October 2010, Rails Girls has spread around the world, from Beijing to Paris and from Budapest to Lisabon, Kiev to Shanghai, from Okayama to Sao Paolo. Guides for local organisers are today available in a variety of languages, including Japanese and Russian.
Linda is today a global coding ambassadrise and since 2012 the Digital Champion for Finland and she has made success also in the US as community manager of Codecademy.
As a true entrepreneur Linda has in 2014 made one of the biggest success stories on Kickstarter raising funding for releasing her book in the making. Linda´s goal was to raise minimum 20k and already the first day - 23 January 2014 - she tweeted: What a day. 24 hours and $100k. And in the end: 9,258 backers pledged $380,747 to help bring Linda´s project to life.
Hello Ruby: Adventures in Coding is a 112 page fairytale into the wonderful world of technology, computers and coding. It comes with a set of activities to support the learning of computational thinking skills for 5-7 year old kids.
