Got an innovation that deserves a wider audience? Apply now for a chance to feature in the Oxford AHSN innovation poster showcase at the Biotrinity conference in London in April.

A total of 26 spaces are available across 26-27 April at the major European investment and biopartnering event which will be attended by more than 1000 delegates. The Life Sciences Minister George Freeman MP is delivering the opening keynote address.

A similar Oxford AHSN innovation poster showcase at Biotrinity 2015 drew together innovators and investors and sparked new partnerships (see photo, above). Feedback from our exhibitors included:

Attend our Biotrinity workshop on turning research into commerce
The Oxford AHSN is pulling together an expert panel at Biotrinity to discuss open innovation and the translation of university research into new companies with a particular focus on the Structural Genomics Consortium. The Oxford AHSN is a Cornerstone Patron of Biotrinity 2016.

We're hosting roadshows with our partners

The Oxford AHSN plans to hold a series of roadshows instead of a single annual general meeting. The aim is to reach a wider audience and engage more deeply with our partners. At its meeting on 28 January the Oxford AHSN Board agreed that this approach would highlight the work being done by local stakeholders and partners - the key aim of the AHSN. The roadshows will take place in May 2016. Please let us know if you would like to host one. We aim for a good spread across all areas covered by the Oxford AHSN. Details will be confirmed soon.

CLINICAL INNOVATION ADOPTION:

NHS innovators get industry insights on 3M visit

About 30 frontline NHS innovators begin a unique support programme on 18 February. The year-long part-time course has been created in collaboration with Health Education England Thames Valley and Bucks New University. It will help health staff identify innovations and follow them through to improved patient care.

Course participants will get first-hand experience at industry partners of the Oxford AHSN. The first of these visits took place on 26 January when a contingent including colleagues from North West Coast AHSN paid a visit to 3M in Bracknell, see below.

The Practical Innovating in Healthcare Settings course will be run a second time in the autumn. Use this link to register your interest.

PATIENT & PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT, ENGAGEMENT AND EXPERIENCE: Leading Together programme under way

Patients and health professionals have met for the first time as part of our pioneering Leading Together programme. The first of six courses running throughout 2016 started in High Wycombe this week, see photo above. The aim is to encourage strategic collaboration between lay partners and NHS staff to design and deliver services better tailored to individual needs. Places are still available for later cohorts.

BEST CARE CLINICAL NETWORKS:

All six memory clinics for people with Dementia in Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and Oxfordshire now meet national standards following a major investment in expert nurse input by the Oxford AHSN. Read more >
The Early Intervention in Mental Health network welcomed a delegation from Australia in January for a best practice exchange with a particular focus on digital initiatives. The visit from representatives of the Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre followed a similar meeting with colleagues from Norway in December.

PATIENT SAFETY:

Quality Improvement training completed

Practice leaders, commissioners, researchers and informatics representatives from across the Oxford AHSN region completed a productive Quality Improvement (QI) training programme.

It was delivered by the NHS Improving Quality (NHS IQ) team and Mike Davidge supported training in measurement for improvement. The sharing of knowledge, experience and interactive teaching made for six energising days.

Focusing on undertaking QI in the ‘real world’ of healthcare, delegates developed their understanding of improvement methodology, measurement, sustainability, and their role in leading quality improvement.

Professor Charles Vincent, Oxford AHSN Patient Safety Lead, engaged the audience in a thought-provoking session on models and strategies for safety.

Evaluation of this initiative has been very positive. The Oxford AHSN Patient Safety team is now providing coaching in practice to support project teams in implementing their learning.

NHS TEST BEDS:

What next?

Our work with clinical leaders and industry innovators to develop respiratory and stroke services and for people with long-term conditions will continue despite our joint proposal with Wessex AHSN not being included in the first wave of the NHS test bed programme which was announced last month.

Partnerships within the AHSNs have been strengthened and the momentum reflected in signing memoranda of understanding with 16 innovators will not be lost. We have also benefited from independent evaluation, including from the Office of Health Economics and Rand.

Our joint steering group and partners will now decide how both AHSNs can best support a bid or bids to wave 2 of the NHS test beds programme in 2016/17.

OXFORD AHSN BOARD MEETING, 28 January 2016:

The Oxford AHSN Board met for the first time in 2016 and reviewed the draft business plan submitted to NHS England. This will be published at the end of March following review by the AHSN Partnership Board when it meets on 30 March at Green Park, Reading.

The Board also agreed that the Annual Review for 2015/16 would be prepared for circulation at the May roadshows (see above). Please contact us if you have something you would like included.

Oxford shortlisted for European capital of innovation prize

Oxford is the only English city shortlisted for the European Capital of Innovation Award. The winner from the nine finalists will be revealed in April.

They will receive a prize of just under €1m. Find out more in this short film >
