Small Business Reading List

January 29, 2016

Welcome to another Small Business Reading List! We start with a big social media prediction for 2016 that might surprise you. We’ll follow that up with another surprising exchange David Brock reported with a close client, along with the important lesson he learned from it. From there we’ll go over how free payroll calculators work, and what you can and can’t expect from them. We’ll close it out with two stories on how current events might affect your business in 2016: one article on rising interest rates, and another on Google’s upcoming Panda update, which could have a big impact on your search results. Enjoy.

Social Media Predictions for 2016

Mike Alton - The Social Media Hat

I've talked elsewhere about my predictions for this year, specifically with regard to the ever-changing social media landscape. Everyone wants to look ahead and try to discern what new trends or tools will emerge. While ease of creation is making video more and more prevalent, my stated prediction has been a bit different than the rest. In essence, I've stated that I believe 2016 will see a reversal of a trend that had been growing up until now.

Everyone Is Fighting A Battle You Know Nothing About!

David Brock - http://partnersinexcellenceblog.com/everyone-is-fighting-a-battle-you-know-nothing-about/

Today, I had an unusual exchange of emails with a top executive (client and close friend).  I’d sent, perhaps too casually,  a note with a critique and suggestions on a project his team had been working on, somewhat related to the things I was doing with the organization. It was a very tough project, they had done a good job, despite the circumstances and restrictions they faced.  But there were some areas that need to be addressed to help in executing the overall strategies and plans we’d been working on with the executive.  I dashed off a quick note with the observations and recommendations.

How To Use A Free Payroll Calculator

Jeremy Marsan - Fit Small Business

Small business owners have a lot of responsibility when it comes to calculating employment taxes. There’s not only several different taxes that need to reach multiple government agencies, but any error can result in stiff penalties from the IRS. In this guide, we’ll show you how to use a free payroll calculator to make this task easier. We’ll also explain how Gusto payroll software can be used to calculate and pay employment taxes automatically – so you don’t even have to worry about using a payroll calculator or filling out IRS forms.

Higher Interest Rates and Your Business

Barbara Weltman - Big Ideas For Small Business

Last December, the Federal Reserve announced that it was raising the Federal Funds Rate (the rate at which banks borrow money from each other overnight) by a quarter of a percentage point, and would likely be making additional rate hikes in the near future. What does this rate increase and those to come mean to you?

The Most Important Things We Learned About Google's Panda Algo

Jennifer Slegg - Moz Blog

Webmasters were caught by surprise two weeks ago, when Google released many new statements about their Panda algorithm to The SEM Post. Traditionally, Google tends to be rather quiet about their search algorithms, but their new comments were a departure from this. Google was quite transparent and shared a lot of new Panda-related information that many SEOs weren't aware of. Here are what I consider to be the top new takeaways from Google about the Panda algorithm. These are all things that SEOs can put into action, either to create new, great-quality content or to increase the quality value of their current content.
