February 2016

Is it too late to wish you a Happy New Year?
Well, since this is our first newsletter of 2016 we thought we should!  The plants seem rather confused as to what season we are in but they are sure to work it out soon...

Nursery opening
The nursery will open to visitors again on Friday 4th March.  Opening times will then be as normal until the end of October; Fri, Sat & Sun, 9.30am to 5pm.  We hope to see you, but in the meantime we are sending out mail order plants, and will also be attending ...

The AGS Early Spring Show
We will be taking a selection of Joe Sharman's Snowdrops and our own choice woodland perennials for sale to the Alpine Garden Society Early Spring Show at Harlow on Saturday Feb 27th. Further details at the bottom of this newsletter.

Website:
Over the next few weeks visitors to our website should notice some changes.  Let us know what you think - we are always trying to improve things as the website is vital to our business.  The changes should make the website clearer and easier to use; the addition of more photos will be an ongoing project throughout the year.

Attention Garden Clubs: New addition to Talks
Tim spends his winter evenings driving here, there and everywhere to give a variety of talks to garden clubs.  Having exhausted Tim's full repertoire, Thurston Garden Club requested a new subject this year - hence the creation of 'Ground cover (doesn't have to be boring)'!  This talk is now available to all garden clubs to book for 2017 onwards...(2016 is pretty much fully booked already...)

Looking good on the nursery now:
Primula 'Lady Greer'

Scopolia carniolica 'Zwanenburg'
Scopolia carniolica
'Zwanenburg'

A spring flowering member of the potato family, and always one of the first perennials to emerge.  Stocky stems to 45cm, hung with deep purple bells from February to May.

Ferula communis
Ferula communis

This perennial fennel is one of the tallest plants we grow.  The clumps of ferny cut grey-green leaves start growing in winter before sending up soaring 3m high stems topped with large yellow umbels in summer.  The seedheads are most attractive and architectural persisting well into winter.

Buy Ferula communis now.

Nonea lutea
Nonea lutea

A rarely seen hardy biennial that will self-seed to make a sustaining patch. Pale yellow Pulmonaria-like flowers in spring. For drained soil in sun. 20cm.
