2000-2010

Dr. Justin Bland (BM, Trumpet Performance, '08) performed Bach's Magnificat and Handel's Foundling Hospital Anthem in Philadelphia in November and then headed to Northern California for performances of Mozart's Requiem with the Live Oak Baroque Orchestra in Sonoma and Petoluma. Afterwards, Justin traveled to Denmark to play in a Vivaldi program with the Copenhagen Soloists in Copenhagen and Helsingør. In December, he played Molter's Trumpet Concerto No. 1 with Musica Angelica in Long Beach and Santa Monica. He then traveled to San Francisco to play two sets of concerts with the American Bach Soloists: Bach's Christmas Oratorio and Handel's Messiah.

Dale Trumbore (BM Composition '09) will hear her choral works premiered this season by Choral Arts (Seattle), WomenSing, the Ripon College Chamber Singers, and the Ithaca College Choir, as well as by the sixteen commissioning choruses of her 2015 Christmas carol consortium. Four of Trumbore's works for chorus were recently published by Boosey & Hawkes and G. Schirmer: A Valentine for Hands (SATB), Frozen In (SSA, violin & piano), Flare (SSAA) and I am Music (SATB & piano). Trumbore is currently working on a new commission for soprano Gillian Hollis (BM Vocal Performance '09) with CHAI Collaborative Ensemble, to be premiered in Spring '16. 2010-2015

John Devlin (MM, '11 and DMA, Orchestral Conducting, 15') has been named the Assistant Conductor of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra beginning in the 2015-16 season. He will serve as cover conductor for Music Director Rossen Milanov, conduct the Orchestra's Holiday Orchestra's Pops concert, and participate in the Orchestra's many educational and outreach programs. John will also serve as the cover conductor for the national Symphony Orchestra's 2015-16 subscription concert series. Over those 14 weeks, John will assist Music Director Christoph Eschenbach (9 weeks) and guest conductors Donald Runnicles, Gianandrea Noseda, Jiri Belohlavek, Neeme Järvi and Osmo Vänskä.

Li-Tan Hsu (DMA, Collaborative Piano, '12) was appointed Collaborative Artist-In-Residence for the Music Division of Performing Arts and Arts Leadership Department at Seattle University where she works as an accompanist/performer for SU Music activities, rehearsals and performances. 


Emily Tsai (MM Oboe Performance, '13)
 performed with her quintet WindSync this year at the Library of Congress. Emily was a member of the first UMD Graduate Fellowship Quintet and was a student of Mark Hill (Professor of Oboe). 


Edward Kim (MM, Collaborative Piano, '13) recently graduated from the Juilliard School and spent the summer of 2015 as a Coaching Fellow at Wolf Trap Opera. He is currently working as a pianist-coach at the Salzburger Landestheater for the 2015-16 season.

Patrick Cook (DMA Voice '13) sang the role of the Prisoner and covering the role of Florestan in a production of Fidelio by Beethoven with Grand Harmonie, a period instrument ensemble that focuses on historically informed performance practice from the classical and romantic eras. Patrick was also the dramaturg, assisting the director with historical research as well as editing and preparing dialogue. The performance will took place at Princeton University on Saturday, January 23.

Andrew McLaughlin (MM, Opera Studio, '11) performed the role of Schaunard in Puccini's La Bohème with Virginia Opera from November 6th-22nd. Performances were in Fairfax, Norfolk and Richmond. 

The alumni of Dr. Lee Hinkle (Professor of Percussion) have been very active recently, Keith Williams (BM, Percussion, '11) is enjoying his first season as principal percussionist with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Eric Plewinski (MM, Percussion, '13) joined the section recently for a concert. 

Andrew Thomas Pardini (MM, Maryland OperaStudio, '13) made his company and role debut as Prince Yamadori & The Imperial Commission in Dayton Opera's production of Madame Butterfly. This January, Pardini served as Resident Baritone as part of Dayton Opera's 2015-16 Artists-In-Residence Program, performing the role of The Herald in Otello as well as doing arts outreach in local schools. District5 presented their show "The Evolution of the Quintet" as part of a special presentation at the U.S. Department of State on November 24th. The quintet consists of UMD alumna Laura Kaufman (MM, Flute Performance), Nina Elhassan (MM, Clarinet  Performance)Laura Brisson (MM, Horn Performance), as well as current students Alison Lowell (DMA, Oboe Performance) and Eddie Rumzis (MM, Bassoon Performance). Reginald Cyntje (MM, Jazz Trombone, '15) has been very busy. Between teaching at Montgomery College, running the Jegna School of Music, LLC, being featured on NPR's Jazz Night in America, winning awards for being DC's best trombonist, authoring the book Stepping Stones: 15 studies in Improvisation, and releasing his 4th album Spiritual Awakening, he still found the time to chat with "On Tap".

On 12/4/15, the UMD Symphony Orchestra and UMD Chamber Singers provocatively combined excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s "Nutcracker Ballet" with David Lang’s poignant "little match girl passion" for solo chamber choir.

The inter-weaving of these two works with imagery by video designer Tim McLoraine seeks a common thread between the lives of those who may have and those who may not.
