Dear Parents
After an interesting inspection in Wolverhampton last week I am delighted to be back at Gateway and am pleased to say there has been plenty to celebrate.
Mr Clark's senior assembly on Thursday was all about Participation, one of the Gateway ASPIRE values. This is something Gateway pupils do in abundance, from active participation in their learning, to after school activities, sporting events, musical events and quizzes. The list could go on! The children appreciate that taking part is the important thing and any medals or successes are a bonus.
Notable events which Gateway pupils have participated in this week included our four national swimmers, Lucy A, Jessica C, Abigail H and Hannah M (pictured above) who thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the Olympic Pool, and Gateway also had 64 runners taking an enthusiastic part in the Cross Country at Hervines Park.

EYU enjoy the story 'Stick Man' |
Storm Gertrude may be on its way but that hasn't stopped EYU! On Monday we explored the Farmer's field; climbing ladders and trees. The children came back marvellously muddy having enjoyed introducing a storyline into the expedition. Ashley climbed all the way to the top of a fallen down tree and commanded his shipmates to scrub the decks. |

Reception children make dinosaur fossils |
This week we have enjoyed listening to our story of the week ‘Dinosaurs and all the rubbish’ by Michael Foreman. We had to listen carefully so that we could order the words and phrases in the first part of the story during our English lesson. We looked closely at the capital letters and full stops to help us make each sentence make sense. |

Year 1 children visit Barnado's |
Thank you all for your kind donations to the charity shop. On Wednesday we walked down to Barnardo’s in Great Missenden, to learn about another form of recycling - ‘re-using’. The children proudly gave their donations to Sharelle, who was running the shop and she thanked them. |

Year 3 children learn about herbivores, omnivores and carnivores |
In science this week the children have used the knowledge they have gained in previous weeks to match images of animal skulls to the correct animal photo. Using their understanding of the terms herbivore, omnivore and carnivore and their understanding of the function of teeth the children were able to look at the teeth in the jaw to help them make connections. |

Year 4 children create excellent explanation booklets |
This week in Year 4 we have been working hard to create our very own volcano booklets, which will soon be proudly displayed in our classrooms. These combine what we have learnt about the structure of the Earth, plate tectonics and volcanoes, with our current English focus on explanation texts. |

Next week we will continue to look at Maps and the different ways that we can use this site. Some of these ways include, calculating travel times, using different modes of transport and looking at different parts of the world in Streetview. Please ask your children to show you these sites and get them to explain the advantages and disadvantages of using them.

Year 6 - Lucy and Jessica's blog |
It has been another exciting week for Year 6, and a very sporty one at that! Firstly, two girls - Hannah M and Jess C - went along with two Year 5 girls, to compete at the ISA national competition in the London Aquatic Centre. This is where the Olympics were held.
Also in the past week, there was a cross country race. The Year 6 girls came 4th and the Year 6 boys came 2nd overall. Everyone gave their best effort, did a fantastic job and made the school very proud. |

National General Knowledge Quiz |
On Thursday afternoon, 12 children from Years 3, 4 , 5 and 6 set off for Davenies School, Beaconsfield, to participate in the Regional Heat of the National General Knowledge Quiz.
Our 2 teams were soon subjected to wide ranging and demanding questions and yet, a little way into the competition, were holding on to 2nd and 3rd place simultaneously. It was, however, a false dawn and by the end of the quiz our best position was 8th out of the 12 teams entered, despite giving some excellent answers.
