Brentwood Branch Gets Ready for Renovation

Brentwood Branch LibraryRenovation of the Brentwood Branch Library will begin soon, so we will close the branch at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Programs and meetings planned in the community room will be accessible through April 30. That will give us time to move out the collection and offices, and set up our temporary home at 2720 S. Glenstone Ave., in the Brentwood Shopping Center.

The site will be open the first week of May with some of your favorite Brentwood staff. Hours of operation are expected to be 10:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Service will be limited: You’ll be able to pick up items on hold and return them; peruse a small collection of new books, large-print books, magazines and children’s toys; and check out Chromebooks for in-library use.

Watch for details about upcoming ReNew Brentwood special events and fundraisers in the March issue of Between Volunteers and the spring issue of Bookends.

Wi-Fi Hot Spots Available for Check Out Feb. 1

Sprint Wi-Fi Hot SpotNeed an Internet connection at home for research, a school project, to pay bills or apply for a job online? Taking a trip and want to stay connected? Soon, you can take Wi-Fi with you when you check out a Hot Spot from the Library. It’s our latest effort to bridge the “digital divide,” expanding possibilities for students and adults without Internet access. Beginning Monday, Feb. 1, library card holders can check out a pocket-size Wi-Fi Hot Spot to use anywhere you go to connect your tablet, laptop and other Wi-Fi-enabled device to the Internet.

Each of the 40 devices carry a simple how-to card inside the sturdy carrying case. Patrons can ask for one at the checkout desk of the Library Station, the Willard or Ash Grove branches, or reserve one via thelibrary.org/catalog, under “Hot Spots,” (or call a library branch) and have it delivered to another branch or Mobile Library. The device can be used anywhere in the United States, but coverage may vary. Any age can check out a Sprint Hot Spot for three weeks, and renewals are permitted if there’s no waiting list. Late fee is 10 cents per day; the device will be de-activated 24 hours after the due date. Just return it to any library or book drop.

What’s New?

We have exciting news for genealogy researchers. Springfield-Greene County Library card holders can now check out the Ozarks Genealogical Society’s materials housed in the Library Center’s Local History & Genealogy Department.

This expanded access means more people in more communities across the country can use the collection of 2,500-plus historical and genealogical resources.
