In the museum - Why Do We Say That?

The Multicultural Heritage Centre Museum has a fascinating new exhibit called, “Why Do We Say That?” an exhibition that explores the strange phrases that pepper our language and where those phrases came from.

One of our favourites sayings and a very famous expression is, “Mad as a Hatter” which means to be completely crazy. This saying comes from the 17th and 18th centuries — well before “Alice In Wonderland”. In 17th century France, poisoning often occurred among haberdashers (hat makers) who used mercury for the hat felt. The “Mad Hatter Disease” was marked by shyness, irritability, and tremors that would make the person appear “mad.”

Some phrases that seem innocent and quirky can have a dark and violent origin. A great example of that is “Cat got your tongue?” which was connected to the old English Navy discipline technique of flogging. The whip often used was called the Cat-o’-nine-tails which after it was used, the victim would stay quiet for a long time.

So visit our upstairs museum and find out, “Why Do We Say That?” and discover the origins and stories around some of our common phrases.

On display from January 21 to April 5.
