NCCID Alert: Month in Review
January 29, 2016
An edited compilation of our individual NCCID Alerts.

(Note: With NCCID's transition to a new host affecting the release of all Alerts, including MIR, the items below are drawn from a longer than normal period. We will return to a monthly schedule going forward.)
NCCID Alerts have been fairly quiet these past few months, and we're now in a position to tell you why — we've been busy changing host organizations! Staff at the Centre are now happily settled into our new offices at the University of Manitoba
ZIKA VIRUS: Quick Links for Public Health

JANUARY 29, 2016  As global attention to Zika virus intensifies, NCCID has developed this Quick Links resource for Canadian public health professionals. We provide links to key leaders and sources in infectious disease prevention, control and knowledge. The pages are updated on a regular basis and will thus remain relevant as new information emerges.

DISEASE DEBRIEF: MERS-CoV

Our inaugural Emerging Infectious Diseases & Outbreaks Alert shines a light on our Disease Debriefs, reviews of essential information on prominent infectious diseases for Canadian public health practitioners and clinicians. Joining NCCID's roster of resources for Ebola and EV-D68 is our newest Debrief about MERS-CoV (Middle Eastern Respiratory Coronavirus). In it, we explore four questions:
  1. What are its important characteristics?
  2. What is happening with current outbreaks?
  3. What is the current risk for Canadians?
  4. What measures should be taken for a suspected case or contact?

National Collaborating Centres Influenza Project

NCCID is part of a two-year collaborative project reviewing several key issues regarding Influenza and influenza-like illnesses (ILI), including the burden of influenza, the experiences of Canadian health care workers during the flu season, the effectiveness of vaccines, as well as prevention strategies and surveillance methods. In partnership with other Centres, the NCCs have developed a suite of new knowledge products to address these and other issues.

Modelling for Public Health Discussion Group (mod4PH)

A virtual space dedicated to conversations on how mathematical modelling can be better understood and used by those working in public health and infectious disease control, mod4PH is a multi-disciplinary discussion forum hosted by NCCID on LinkedIn. It promotes collaboration among public health professionals, modellers, infectious disease experts and others with an interest in bridging silos, developing shared language, and making modelling more useful and relevant to current public health challenges. The forum builds on discussions from an October 2014 workshop co-hosted by the NCCID and the Pan-InfORM team.
