Hi <<First Name>>,

A lot going on in District 13 right now!

"Reso-A" Grant Applications Coming Due -- Apply Today!

Capital grant ("Reso-A") applications to the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President are due at 11:59pm on February 7. More information is available on the the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President's web site. Schools are strongly encouraged to apply for a capital grants - every school should be looking to submit a grant application. Note that a particular priority of the Borough President this year is the technology and equipment needed to expand computer science in support of the CodeBrooklyn campaign and citywide CS4ALL initiatives (See a discussion of this commitment between the Chancellor and State Senator Hamilton at the Senate Standing Committee on Education) . Don't let this opportunity pass your school by.

Four Council Members - Levin, Cumbo, Lander, and Cornegy - represent portions of District 13. Like all New York City Council Members, they each have grant funds available for distribution (in addition to the funds available through the Borough President). Contact their offices for more information and their office deadlines, which are also coming up very soon.

Note too that now is the time of the year when CECs are collecting ideas for major capital requests to submit to the School Construction Authority. These SCA requests are intended for major capital improvements such as new auditoriums, roof repairs, etc. If you have a suggested MAJOR school capital improvement, feel free to suggest it to us by email.

Big Middle School News

Huge week for District 13 middle schools, with two big announcements last Thursday.

On Thursday night the re-design of The Dock Street School MS 313 was unveiled. Congratulations to Principal Vaughan and the entire 313 community! Press coverage: Also, take a moment to check out their beautiful new web site!

The same day, Chancellor Fariña announced that the DOE has decided that the new school to be constructed at Atlantic Yards/Pacific Park will be a middle school. Coverage:

School Construction Authority Commits to New Downtown School Capacity in Districts 13 and 15

From DoBro schools:
In District 13 (Downtown north of Fulton / DUMBO / Brooklyn Heights / Fort Greene) they [the School Construction Authority] [ha]ve increased the projected need for seats from 1090 to 3417…more than a threefold increase since 2013! In District 15 (Downtown south of Fulton / Cobble Hill / Gowanus / Carroll Gardens / Boerum Hill) the projected need for new school seats has increased from 640 to 2192! That’s a lot of additional kids.

The SCA acknowledged this increased need in the proposed SCA Capital Plan that was just released. This plan includes requests for funding in the next annual city budget. If approved and funded, this is what we can expect to happen based on information in the Capital Plan:

DISTRICT 13 (Downtown north of Fulton / DUMBO / Brooklyn Heights / Fort Greene): 3 new elementary schools will be built somewhere in the area. Planning for the first 572-seat would start in April of this year for completion Sept. 2019! The second 476-seat school would be completed in Sept. 2020, and the third 572-seat school is scheduled for completion for July of 2021. Currently there is a new middle school opening up in DUMBO in fall 2016 and a new middle school under construction at Pacific Park / Atlantic Yards to open in 2019.

DISTRICT 15 (Downtown south of Fulton / Cobble Hill / Gowanus / Carroll Gardens / Boerum Hill) : 1 new 824-seat school to open either 2020 or 2021 in the area.  Also in the works is a 436-seat addition to P.S. 32 in Carroll Gardens.
