Thank you for signing up

This is the Waverley Singers' first newsletter to supporters on our new e-mail list, and we'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who's signed up.  We promise not to flood your inbox with lots of messages.  We expect to send no more than six per season; that's one at the beginning, one before each concert and maybe another if we have special events or announcements to make.

Everyone on the list at the end of January went into a draw for a pair of tickets for Bach's St John Passion - our concert on 19th March.  The winner was Simon Cooper of Liphook, and his tickets have already been sent to him using our TicketSource online booking service.

We're really keen to grow the list, so please feel free to forward this mail to friends or suggest that they sign up for future messages on our web site

At the St John Passion concert, our chosen charity is the Motor Neurone Disease Association (www.mndassociation.org)   The West Surrey Branch of the MND Association will give a short talk during the concert break and then there will be a retiring collection in aid of the charity.  You can find out more about the local branch here.

2016 Summer Concert

For our summer concert, we have an exciting selection of choral greats that includes Walton's The Twelve, Bach's motet Lobet den Herrn and Vivaldi's Gloria

The concert will be at St Thomas on the Bourne on Saturday 18th June, starting at the slightly earlier time of 7:00 p.m.  There will be the opportunity for the choir's Patrons and supporters group to join us for a glass of wine after the event.

2016-17 Programme

Planning for 2016-17 is already well advanced, and we expect to present a range of new as well as more familiar pieces in our four main concerts.  Last season, we had a very good response to our concert in Alton, with several people saying that we should perform there more often.  We also noticed that Alton doesn't have town fireworks on Bonfire Night, so on 5th November we will present a programme of Choral Fireworks, and do our best to make St Lawrence Church rock.

The Christmas concert will take place on Saturday 10th December at St Andrew's in Farnham, and as well as hearing the choir's carols, some old, some new, the audience will have its traditional chance to join in and sing Christmas favourites.

Our 2017 Come and Sing event is 'pencilled in' for  Saturday 4th February; this is a great opportunity, for singers who haven't the time to join a choir and attend regular rehearsals, to enjoy the fun of taking part in a rehearsal and final 'performance'  sing-through all in one day.

Handel's catalogue of works includes 29 oratorios, 42
operas, and numerous large scale pieces of church music in Latin, German and English. We will present Israel in Egypt for our Spring Concert.  The libretto is English, and tells the biblical story of the escape of the Israelites across the Red Sea.  This work was premiered in London three years before Messiah.  It was very popular in the revival of Handel's music and the development of choral societies in the 19th century, and the subject of one of the earliest known audio recordings, in 1888.

We last performed the work in 1996, and some of the more long-standing members of the choir remember it as a really good sing, with tremendous choruses.  We'll perform with a baroque orchestra in the excellent acoustics of St Andrew's Garrison Church, Aldershot, on 25th March 2017.

We'll return to Frensham on 17th June 2017 for our Summer concert, in the beautiful setting of the parish church.

We hope you've enjoyed this short newsletter, and we look forward to seeing you at our concerts.  If you'd like to follow us on social media or tell your friends about the Waverley Singers, there are links to our Twitter, Facebook and web pages below.
