HLA Alerts

Health Libraries Australia, the national health group of the Australian Library and Information Association
February 2016

Hello and welcome to our latest issue of HLA Alerts kindly sponsored by OCLC.

In this issue we finalise the date for the HLA PD Day in Sydney – 18 July 2016, so make sure you save the date and for those of you that need to fly in, keep an eye on the airfare and accommodation prices; a call for papers will be out soon. This issue also contains links to information on the Zika Virus, a rapidly emerging international health issue and right on our doorstep with warnings in place for several of our neighbouring Pacific island nations (refer to: NZ Government Safe Travel warning).

We wish good luck to presenters, students and mentors participating in the current HLA/QUT Health Librarians Essentials course. We hope you all enjoy your experiences.

EZproxy Connects Library Users to E-Content with a Single Sign-On
Increase the usage of your library’s online services by making it easier for patrons to access e-content outside the library. EZproxy makes access to online journals, databases and other licensed content convenient and efficient by allowing patrons to use the same usernames and passwords they are already using to access library account details or other institution services. EZproxy authenticates users against local authentication systems to allow single sign-on access to your library’s licensed content. Available as a hosted service or a stand-alone client, EZproxy helps your users gain access to your content.
Contact australia@oclc.org or call 1300 260 795 to learn more about how EZproxy makes authentication easy.

Save the Date
ALIA Health Libraries Australia will be continuing its highly successful professional development days in 2016. The confirmed date is Monday 18th July and the venue will be the Kolling Institute of Medical Research at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. Our valued hosts are the staff of the Douglas Piper Library, Royal North Shore Hospital.
A call for abstracts will soon be posted.

Membership Project Update
The first steps in our membership project are underway. This entails bringing together all our various email lists, membership records and subscription lists to identify one definitive list of our HLA “family”. This list in association with the work undertaken by Melanie Kammerman and her team will give a truer picture of the Australian health library employment sector.

There are two things you can do to help HLA; encourage your colleagues and institutions to join ALIA (HLA), and, ensure you have joined our HLA Community page. As a “heads up”, within the next couple of months we shall send out a survey to get your ideas and opinions and we would appreciate your input when the time comes.
