WMRAS Members dialogue with Manpower Minister

Arising from feedback from members regarding their difficulties in hiring and retaining local workers as well as in engaging foreign workers, WMRAS organised a dialogue with the Minister for Manpower, Mr Lim Swee Say, on 19 January 2016. The event which was supported by the NTUC Membership Dept was held in NTUC Centre in One Marina Boulevard.

After hearing from the minister who was the former Minister for the Environment when WMRAS was formed in 2001 and also, NTUC’s ex-secretary general; on how the Lean Enterprise Development (LED) Scheme can help companies meet their manpower needs, WMRAS is now seeking input from members for potential projects or ideas which waste and recycling businesses can implement to address their manpower issues. Please contact the secretariat if you have any ideas or questions.

Wong Fong shares its focus on Research & Development

Rarely do family-run small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) employ futurists, but Wong Fong Engineering Works is way ahead of the curve.

The 52-year-old engineering firm's investment in an in-house research and innovation centre in 2013 has paid off handsomely; among other projects, it is now involved in building Singapore's first high-performance sports car.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), in its addenda to the President's Address released yesterday, said promoting innovation and transformation among SMEs will be key to achieving sustainable growth.

Hundreds of goods donated by Singaporeans - including clothes, toys and books - are on sale at City Square Mall today, to raise money for disadvantaged women and children here.

The weekend-long sale, organised by sustainability firm Eco-Business and property giant City Developments (CDL), aims to raise $40,000 for the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO) after one-for-one matching by the Government's Care and Share movement.

More than 6,000kg of second-hand goods were collected over three weeks and $7,000 raised yesterday alone. CDL also made a $10,000 pledge to the SCWO Service Fund.

The initiative, called EcoBank, aims to reduce waste and promote sustainable consumption in Singapore. During the three-week collection drive, bins were set up at seven locations, including City Square Mall, Republic Plaza, Fuji Xerox Towers and Manulife Centre.

Organisations look to reduce food waste with centralised recycling system

SINGAPORE: With 25 F&B outlets, a supermarket and a food court, the Amara hotel and shopping centre at Tanjong Pagar generates about one and a half tonnes of food waste every day.

The food waste used to go into an incineration plant and a landfill, but it will soon be recycled when the hotel fully installs its new food digester system.

The system works by decomposition, with microbes turning the food into slurry water, a combination of liquids and solids. It is then put into a filtration system, turning it into recyclable water, which can be pumped back into the system.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said more premises have adopted on-site food waste treatment solutions, with the agency co-funding 10 on-site food waste recycling projects so far. Four projects received approval last year, compared to just one in 2011.
