Important This Week:

From the BEU and Driscoll Teachers:
Come to the School Committee Meeting- This Thursday February 4th at 6PM, School Committee Room, 5th floor of Town Hall!

Driscoll teachers and all Brookline educators have been working under an expired contract since September 1. We've made several proposals and yet have been frustrated by lack of a significant counterproposal from the Brookline School Committee

The BEU has made contract proposals that will:

Prioritize individual attention for every child:
  • Limit the number of class sections per teacher in grades 6-12 to open up time for meeting the targeted needs of specific children.
  • Support co-teaching with necessary prep time.
  • Limit non-instructional tasks such as data collection & paperwork.
  • Eliminate non-instructional duties for teachers.
  • Guarantee every educator sufficient and equitable time to prepare to teach every day.

Enhance the safety of our students and staff:
  • Assess specialists’ caseloads according to the intensity of needs.
  • Require building aides who can step in where needed.
  • Assign more than one educator to rooms with 65 or more children.
  • Increase classroom safety with appropriate staffing and equipment.

Respect the professionalism of our educators:
  • Reserve time in staff meetings to discuss educators’ individual or collective concerns.
  • Strengthen the voice of teachers in the evaluation system.
  • Agree to prep periods and paid lunch for paraprofessionals.
  • Guarantee fair compensation for all, including a living wage & fair scheduling for paraprofessionals.

Negotiations scheduled for January 28, February 1, and February 22.

We ask that members of the Driscoll community join us in calling on the School Committee to come to an agreement concerning the many important problems we have addressed.

You can show your support by joining us at the next School Committee on Thursday, February 4.

Driscoll School is now a donation site for the Brookline Food Pantry!  As food insecurities are on the rise in Brookline, the pantry has had more visitors than ever and needs help from the community.  Please consider picking up a few non-perishable items or toiletries the next time you are at the store and drop them off in the designated bin by the Driscoll office.  A volunteer will collect the items and deliver them to the Brookline Food Pantry.  Thank you so much to all the Driscoll community members who have donated so generously already.  We have collected over 350 items already!  Thank you!!  For more information about our donation site, please email debbiekleiner@yahoo.com.  For more information about the Brookline Food Pantry, please visit brooklinefoodpantry.org.

Changes 2016

The 4th and 7th Grade Composition portion of the MCAS exam has been eliminated.

All Students in Grade 3 through 8th Grade will have a two-day ELA exam.

On Day 1, exams in Grade 3 through 8th Grade will continue to have open response style questions.  3rd grade will continue to have short answer questions as well.

Day 2 will be broken into two parts. 2A will be a traditional MCAS test, similar to Day 1.

2B will have the new PARCC type questions; a narrative writing piece, which involves rewriting the story, finishing the story, or some other form of narrative writing, connected to a text.

Math and Science Testing

The MCAS Science and Technology/Engineering test will continue in May in grades 5 and 8.  The MCAS Mathematics test will be administered in May for Grades 3-8. Students will continue to answer multiple choice, short answer, and open response questions. The only change expected in the mathematics test this year is the inclusion of Type 1, 2, 3 questions from PARCC.

  • May 10, 2016 – Grades 3 and 5 Math Session 2

  • May 20, 23, 24, 2016 – Make-up Testing

Challenges

Some of the biggest challenges students face in taking the MCAS test is in their ability to work independently, implement learned strategies, persist, and maintain confidence and motivation throughout the entire test.  Students often possess strong content knowledge but at times can experience some difficulty applying content knowledge independently in a standardized way.

Parent Help

We ask parents to support your child before and during testing days.  Please talk to your child about the MCAS test and reassure them there is absolutely no need to worry.  They are ready!  Communicate to them your confidence in their ability to do well just like they do every day!  Encourage your child to stick to it and persist.  Remind them how much everyone cares about them and they will be supported by teachers and by you!

As we approach the first 2016 MCAS testing session parents can do a few simple but very important tasks that make a big difference on testing day:

  • Please make sure your child attends school and is on time.  If you have scheduled a doctor visit or plan to keep your child out of school for any reason, please reschedule those plans so children can take the test during their scheduled times.
  • Please ensure your child goes to bed early and eats a hearty breakfast before coming to school.
  • Communicate confidence, highlight their strengths and encourage your child to take their time, review their work and never give up.
  • Compliment your child for giving their best.

Thank you very much for your support and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at eileen_woods@brookline.k12.ma.us or david_youkilis@brookline.k12.ma.us

Regards,
Eileen and David
