Learning about university life

Students in the Lower Sixth (Year 12) were joined in the Sixth Form Study Centre by 35 students from other London schools to experience life at one of the UK's top Universities.

A University of Cambridge lecturer delivered an Undergraduate-style lecture which sparked lively discussion and enthused students who are beginning to consider their university applications for 2017 entry.

Head of RE Katherine Bowman said: "The lecturer, David, was excellent and really helped all the students in considering their priorities when applying to Universities."

West Hatch has an excellent track record over many decades in placing students at the top Russell Group Universities.

This year two new initiatives have been added to the existing UCAS Application and Mentoring Programme - a Specialist Pathways opportunity that helps students really focus on a package of A-Level subjects particularly suited to their needs and a mentoring scheme run by Oxford University.

In addition to an experienced Sixth Form Pastoral and Teaching Team, the school is also fortunate to have George Green, a previous Head of the Sixth Form, in a dedicated role to support all Sixth Form in their University applications.

Summer School place

In preparation for joining West Hatch Sixth Form, Year 11 student Amelia Rayment has gained a place at the Oxford/Cambridge Summer school in July.

Amelia will spend two weeks in Oxford studying Law as well as getting involved in other aspects of university life and living in student accommodation.

The application process involved a telephone interview and the submission of her predicted GCSE grades.

KS5 Co-ordinator Karen Moore said: "The Sixth Form team are pleased for Amelia and hope she enjoys her time. This is something the team would encourage all prospective and current Year 12 students to consider as many universities offer summers schools, many of which are free of charge."

These opportunities allow students to access subjects that they may have considered, as well as giving a better understanding of a subject that they want to follow into a career.
