NHF Dr E. Dekker Grants to CARIM

All 2015 NHS Dr E Dekker Senior Postdoc grants and the Established Investigator grant have been awarded to CARIM researchers.  The Dr E. Dekker programme of the Netherlands Heart Foundation (NHF) is a stimulation programme which contains fellowships for outstanding investigators – clinicians and non-clinicians – in the cardiovascular field.

Earlier in 2015, Marc Strik and Martijn Brouwers received a Dr. E. Dekkers Arts voor aanvang Specialisatie and Junior Staflid grant of the NHS.

NHS Studentbeurzen 2016 - call for proposals

MR CLEAN trial in NEJM 12 "most notable articles of 2015'

UM master thesis prize for Milou Meeuse

During the Dies Natalis 2016, which took place on January 11, 2016, Milou Meeuse (intern at the Department of Molecular Genetics supervised by Willem Voncken and Dietbert Neumann, was presented a UM Best Master's Thesis Prize 2015.

Title: "MNK1a and AMPK: partners in metabolic adaptation?"

Descartes-Huygens Prize 2015 for Benoit Viollet

On the nomination of Dietbert Neumann, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has awarded the Descartes-Huygens Prize 2016 to molecular physiologist Benoit Viollet (Institute Cochin, Paris). He receives the prize for his excellent research on the energy sensor AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and his contribution to the French-Dutch collaboration, with special reference to his previous successful collaboration with the cardiac metabolism group of Jan Glatz and Joost Luiken. The prize (€ 23,000) will enable Benoit Viollet to cover the cost for a 6-month research residence at Maastricht University.

Recent top publication in Science Translational Medicine with researchers Biochemistry Dept. as co-authors

Kanin Wichapong, Gerry Nicolaes, Tilman Hackeng, Christian Weber, Hans Ippel and Dennis Suylen (Dept. of Biochemistry) are co-authors of the publication 'Recruitment of classical monocytes can be inhibited by disturbing heteromers of neutrophil HNP1 and platelet CCL5' (Science Translational Medicine 2015 Dec 9;7(317)). IF: 15.8.

Abstract

In acute and chronic inflammation, neutrophils and platelets, both of which promote monocyte recruitment, are often activated simultaneously. We investigated how secretory products of neutrophils and platelets synergize to enhance the recruitment of monocytes. We found that neutrophil-borne human neutrophil peptide 1 (HNP1, α-defensin) and platelet-derived CCL5 form heteromers. These heteromers stimulate monocyte adhesion through CCR5 ligation. We further determined structural features of HNP1-CCL5 heteromers and designed a stable peptide that could disturb proinflammatory HNP1-CCL5 interactions. This peptide attenuated monocyte and macrophage recruitment in a mouse model of myocardial infarction. These results establish the in vivo relevance of heteromers formed between proteins released from neutrophils and platelets and show the potential of targeting heteromer formation to resolve acute or chronic inflammation.

Who's new?!

My name is Chiara Campana, I’m from Poggio Torriana, Italy, and in January 2016 I started my PhD at the Department of Cardiology, Maastricht University under the supervision of Dr Jordi Heijman. My interest in biological mechanisms and life sciences began during my time at the University of Bologna, Italy, where I completed a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. This is also where I became interested in cardiac arrhythmias. During my PhD at Maastricht University I will be working on a project in computational cardiology that will focus on the use of multi-scale computational methods to study the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying  cardiac arrhythmias.
