News from HIV Research for Prevention 2016 (HIVR4P)

Abstract submission, registration, and scholarship applications are now open for HIV Research for Prevention (HIVR4P) 2016—the world's only scientific meeting dedicated exclusively to all forms of biomedical HIV prevention, including vaccines, treatment as prevention, microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and new and emerging forms of prevention. Plan now to join us for HIVR4P 2016, 17–20 October 2016 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, Chicago, USA.

Through both abstract and non-abstract driven sessions, HIVR4P supports cross-fertilization between every field of HIV prevention research, while also providing a unique venue to discuss the findings, questions, and priorities specific to each. By bringing every major area of prevention research together, HIVR4P responds to a growing consensus that effective HIV prevention will require a combination of approaches.

HIVR4P represents a bold new way of reporting on, debating, and addressing HIV prevention research progress and challenges. More than 1,300 researchers, funders, policymakers, advocates, and journalists from 45 countries participated in the first biennial HIVR4P conference in Cape Town, South Africa in October 2014. This year, HIVR4P 2016 will take the field further into the future of prevention.

HIVR4P CONFERENCE CHAIRS IN THE NEWS
HIVR4P Co-chair Nelly Mugo of the Kenya Medical Research Institute in Nairobi appeared on the BBC recently to explain the potential use of PrEP to help protect the estimated ¼ million couples in Kenya in which one member is HIV-positive and the other is negative. In the report, “Could HIV drugs give hope to couples with the disease,” Dr. Mugo explained the science behind PrEP, and discussed the implications of the Kenyan government’s recent approval of PrEP for use in the East African nation.
HIVR4P PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
The conference Program Organizing Committee (POC) works closely with the Co-Chairs to develop a balanced and representative program for HIVR4P. The POC includes 46 members reflecting different areas of biomedical prevention research, geography, and gender and career stage. Members of this diverse, global advisory committee of experts met January 19-21 in New York City to plan all aspects of the conference program, with a focus on symposia and plenary sessions.

HIVR4P’s unique, interactive session formats are designed to promote collaboration, exchange, and debate among and between researchers and advocates working across the spectrum of HIV prevention research. Through roundtables, symposia, crosscutting sessions, meet the expert sessions, and networking lunches, as well as more traditional scientific conference sessions, HIVR4P shares a unique commitment to exchange and interaction among attendees. This year, a series of rapporteur sessions will be added to the conference program, to help attendees keep up with the latest developments at sessions they were unable to attend. Learn more about all of our conference session formats here.
