NEW YEAR AND A NEW HEALTHY YOU!

Setting the Tone for the Year

The beginning of the New Year is a time of renewal, an opportunity to let go of the old and embrace some new healthy lifestyle choices. One of the best ways to implement these positive changes into our lives is to create a regular daily routine (Dinacharya).

Creating a positive intention is the place to start.
  1. Wake up early and allow yourself time for stillness and reflection. Meditate if you can, even for a short time, to gather your thoughts.

  2. Start your day with a positive mindset which will set the right tone for the day. These positive intentions will help guide your actions and provide tools for better decision making throughout the day.

  3. Tell yourself that each day is filled with new opportunities and great things can be accomplished if we set our mind to it. These positive words or mantras will make our day more meaningful.

  4. Before connecting to phones, internet, facebook etc give yourself time to connect with your self. Read something positive and uplifting from an inspirational book.

  5. Be grateful – the more you are thankful for what you have, the more you attract things to be thankful for.

  6. Practise kindness and compassion to all beings.

Meditation is a life skill of bringing your body-mind into deep stillness.

Quietness, or stillness in your mind, brings about balance in the body.

Meditation is your daily emotional, mental bath.

Think how you would feel if you didn't bath every day.

Simple Ayurvedic Daily Practices to Detox for the New Year

A few simple lifestyle routines can bring you great health benefits:
  1. Introduce Gandush – a sesame or coconut oil mouth swish to release toxins from your mouth, neck and head area.

  2. Scrape your tongue to remove toxic accumulation (ama) on the tongue.

  3. Detox your system by sipping a cup of boiled water. This rapidly softens and loosens toxins (ama) and helps eliminate them from your body.

  4. Triphala powder is a great gentle daily cleanse for your system and an amazing liver tonic. It is also a rich source of antioxidants and Vitamin C. Try it 1-2 times daily. One tsp steeped in boiled water.

  5. Aloe Vera is an ideal summer cleansing tonic because of its cooling properties. It is anti-inflammatory, antacid (alleviates heartburn), anti-viral and an excellent way to regularly clear your digestive system of toxins (ama).

  6. Do regular Abhyanga (self-oil massage) using our pitta cooling oil blend or coconut oil. This helps nourish and cool the skin, detoxify and a great way to nurture yourself.

A COOLING SUMMER BREAKFAST / DESSERT

RASPBERRY AND ROSEWATER CHIA PUDDING
WITH PISTACHIO CRUMBLE

INGREDIENTS

Chia Pudding
1 cup almond milk
1/2 cup fresh or frozen raspberries
2 tsp raw honey
1/2 tsp rosewater
1/2 tsp maca powder
1/4 cup white chia seeds

Pistachio Crumble
2 tbsp pistachios, coarsely chopped
1 tbsp shredded coconut
1 tsp coconut sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cardamom
edible flowers (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS
Chilling time 2 hours (or overnight)

Blend the almond milk, raspberries, honey, rosewater and maca in a blender until smooth. Transfer to a serving glass or jar. Stir in chia seeds and then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. After 20 minutes give it a stir to make sure the chia seeds distribute evenly while they set.

To make the crumble topping, pre-heat the oven to 200°C. Combine pistachios, coconut, sugar, cinnamon and cardamom in a bowl. Sprinkle in a single layer on a baking tray and bake for 4-5 minutes or until golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

Serve chia pudding topped with pistachio crumble and edible flowers (optional).

NOTE
* Make a few of the puddings in advance (they’ll keep for 3-4 days) and bake a big batch of the pistachio crumble to have on hand (it’ll keep in an airtight container for 2 months). That’s breakfast sorted for the week, plus they’re easily transportable.

* Edible flowers look gorgeous and add flavour and aroma to your favourite dishes. I love adding them to salads, desserts or sweet breakfast bowls. Many grocers sell them in mixed packs in the fridge section. Some of the more common edible varieties are Vivid Velvet Pansies, Snap Dragons, Marigolds and Nasturtiums.
