Greetings from the CTL!

Happy February! While this is a short month, I still have a lot of information to share! In this newsletter, you'll find an introduction to the support services offered to you and your students by the Office of the Dean of Students. Next you'll see that the Foundational Studies Program is seeking faculty to teach UF200 next year. There is also information about an upcoming workshop on the topic of creating rubrics - a grading tool that not only makes the process faster for you, but also more transparent for your students.  Finally, our Adjunct Spotlight focuses on Adrian Rodriguez from the College of Business and Economics.  

Before we get to all of that, I wanted to remind you that, in addition to our in person workshops, the CTL has a variety of online resources you can check out at any time.
The most helpful for busy adjuncts could be our 
A-Z Teaching Resources, which includes links to topics such as active learning techniques, dealing with large classes, grading, leading discussions, etc. Check out the link when you have a moment, and if you have the time, let me know what you found the most helpful or would like more information about.

An Important Resource: The Office of the Dean of Students

The Office of the Dean of Students provides a variety of services to help mobilize students, faculty, staff, and community members by creating transformative experiences, promoting student self-advocacy, and upholding Boise State Shared Values. These services include: 

Student Support Services
This office provides a variety of services designed to support student success and engagement at Boise State University, and plays a significant role in supporting and empowering students and families during difficult times.  Services include the Student Emergency Fund, complete withdrawal advising, and student absence notification to faculty.

Student Conduct Program/Student Rights & Responsibilities
This office facilitates the university's formal processes to uphold the University Shared values through the Student Code of Conduct for academic misconduct and behavioral matters. Students are offered support and guidance while participating in the conduct process.

CARE Team
The Office of the Dean of Students oversees the Boise State CARE Team in an effort to make sure all students, faculty, and staff feel safe while pursuing their educational and personal careers at Boise State. More information can be found at:

Opportunity to teach UF200
 

Do you have a passion for learning that you want to share with others? If so, then consider applying to teach UF200 for the Foundational Studies Program, which has faculty opportunities available for fall 2016 and spring 2017! By teaching UF200 you will help guide second-year students through an exploration of personal, community and global ethics and diversity.

Each course caps at 30 students and includes an experiential learning component. 
A master’s or doctoral degree is required to teach UF200. For more information about UF200,

Upcoming Workshop: Creating Rubrics
 
Rubrics are useful tools for both teachers and students. They streamline the grading process, make assessment easier and evaluation more transparent. For students, rubrics clarify expectations and provide feedback on their work. Nearly every assignment can benefit from a well-crafted rubric. Workshop participants will look at the benefits of using a rubric (for teachers and students), as well as the features of useful rubrics. Participants should bring an assignment that they find particularly difficult to grade; the workshop will include time to begin building a rubric for your own course!

This workshop will be led by Megan Frary on February 26 from 1:30-3 PM in the CTL, ILC 315. Use this link to register.
 

 
Adjunct Spotlight: 
 
Adrian Rodriguez began teaching at Boise State in May of 2015. He brings his ten years of experience in the Marketing and Sales department with Fortune 100 company John Deere to the classroom, where he teaches Professional Selling (MKTG 321) and Ad Agency Management (MKTG 401/402).
 
Adrian has found that he has many opportunities to relate his professional experiences to the content he covers. "Having held a variety of positions I’m able to relate course subject matter to its application in the current corporate/business environments. Sharing 'real-world' stories and relatable examples help students make connections between the two 'worlds' and transition more effectively."

While his students benefit from his perspective, Adrian also gets a lot out of teaching. "I enjoy working with students to help them understand marketing concepts, perhaps sparking an interest where one may not have existed. I also like challenging students to think from a different perspective and understand that what takes place in the business environment can be different and challenging in ways they may not have imagined based on their course work. Overall, teaching really offers me the opportunity to effect change with motivated students rather than focusing on a company’s bottom line."
