10-K Season is Here!

The first few months of the calendar year are when most financial analysts prepare to start crunching data from companies filing their prior year’s statements. Through our Earnings Indicator, Calcbench is already tracking fourth-quarter results disclosed by 313 companies as of Feb. 1. So far that group has seen revenue up 1 percent, net income down 5.1 percent, and cash up 2.2 percent, all compared to fourth-quarter 2014 numbers.

Read below to see what else Calcbench is doing to provide sharper, more precise financial analysis using XBRL-tagged data; when we should start to see 10-K reports from major year-end filers; and other projects, improvements, and new features we have been working on lately.

Looking Back at 2015

Calcbench has recently added more than 100 metrics, both from the face statements and the far reaches of the footnotes, to do even more precise and rapid analysis. We have also refined our “interactive disclosures” feature— perhaps you’re curious about the goodwill allocation in that M&A deal you heard about?

Now you can trace back to the precise number with only three clicks.

More News from Calcbench

A metric known as the ‘Altman Z-Score’ is a well-known formula to predict the chance a company might file for bankruptcy. So we took data from filers in the oil & gas, coal mining, metals mining, and related industries, and ran a quick study to see what the future might hold for these sectors in 2016.  As we all wait breathlessly for much of Corporate America to file their annual reports, analysts who follow Amazon, Schlumberger, and General Motors might get to dive into the footnotes the fastest. Here are average filing times we found for large companies with year-end dates of Dec. 31.

This overview shows how XBRL aids in Financial Analysis by Calcbench Co-Founders Alex Rapp and Pranav Ghai (registration required).

This use case forecasts the impact of low oil prices on the fourth quarter 2015 sales of Oil Services companies. As the data becomes available in the coming weeks, we will inform our clients of the results from our estimates.
