Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2, we have a stimulating talk on conserving artwork in the tropical household led by artist and master conservator, Katrina Vanderlip. The NAGB presents "Conservation in the Tropical Home", a discussion led by Katrina Vanderlip
Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2, we will host a stimulating talk on conserving artwork in the tropical home, led by artist and art conservator Katrina Vanderlip. One of the things that makes a retrospective exhibition like R. Brent Malone: Reincarnation so special is seeing decades-old works looking as fresh as some of their newer counterparts. However, in planning the show, we had to turn several formerly beautiful works down because of the damage they'd endured from our tropical environment. Humidity and pests take their tolls on paintings quickly, and without knowing how to care for their works, collectors risk seeing some of their favorites deteriorate. Vanderlip will be telling us how to keep our beloved pieces in tip-top shape in our discussion. The talk begins at 6 p.m.

The NAGB releases its NE7 archive: Citizenship and Immigration Policies Within Art Practices
The conversation titled Citizenship and Immigration Policies Within Art Practices took place on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at the NAGB. It was led by College of The Bahamas Professor of English Dr. Craig Smith and Keithley Woolward, and addressed one of the nation’s most contentious topics—that of immigration. The roundtable discussion was moderated by activist Joey Gaskins. See more here.

Master Artist Maxwell Taylor opens exhibition at Scarfone-Hartley Gallery
The University of Tampa Scarfone/Hartley Gallery will present an exhibition of woodcuts by nationally acclaimed Bahamian artist Maxwell Taylor. Sixteen extraordinary woodcuts that include social, economic and political subjects will be on view. Taylor will be a visiting artist at the university creating a series of monoprints from February 15 to 26 and will be in conversation with Dr. Erica M. James on February 23. An open studios and gallery reception are set to take place on February 26 at 6 pm. See more about Scarfone/Hartley Gallery here.

Reporting from Nassau Calling
Nassau Calling came to an end at the end of November, and it seems that all the effort and preparation, the shipment, the installation and the presentation itself went by in a flash. But—and therein lies a universal truth of physics —any energy spent is never lost and continues to make ripples and waves, as will our show in Vienna. We did make a quiet mark and impact there, and we can inform you—with not a little pride—that the reaction of the audience was genuinely impressed, deeply curious and fueled with respect. The quality, intensity, variety and strength of the selection put the art scene of The Bahamas once more on the radar of collectors, curators and journalists. Blue Curry on residency at Cannonball in collaboration with the PAMM & Tilting Axis
Next week Blue Curry will start a one-month residency at Cannonball in Miami as an artist invited by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) in conjunction with the upcoming Tilting Axis conference. Cannonball's Residency Program is a hybrid, multi-disciplinary program that empowers Miami’s cultural producers and sustains the city’s position as a hotbed for contemporary art by infusing it with artists and arts professionals from around the globe. The primary focus of the residency program is two-fold: 1) provide long-term, affordable live/work space for Miami artists and 2) offer international artists, scholars, curators and other cultural producers year-round opportunities to research, create new work and respond to issues at stake in South Florida.

Sonia Farmer prepares for her Fresh Milk residency in Barbados
Fresh Milk’s upcoming resident, Bahamian writer and artist Sonia Farmer, will be offering a series of four workshops on different methods of book binding and design at Fresh Milk in March, 2016. This four-week course will examine the intersection of text and the book form. Covering a range of book structures, participants will be encouraged to consider the book as an active part of their storytelling practice, rather than as simply a vessel. Each class will build upon the former to provide students who wish to take all four classes with a thorough beginner knowledge in making handmade books and book objects and fresh ideas on how to approach narratives.
