179 Coats/Blankets
(& 118 Gloves)
in 70 Hours!!

Thanks to everyone who responded so incredibly to our challenge for 70 Coats/Blankets over 70 hours.  An appeal was sent out last Thursday for70 winter children’s coats and warm infant blankets to be gathered in a 70 hour period. Living Springs members and friends donated 136 coats, 43 blankets and 118 gloves!!! The folks at Cooperative Ministry were truly amazed by such an immediate response - and many children/infants have received badly needed items of warmth for last weekend and still upcoming winter days. The number “70” reminded us how the Savior sent out 70 disciples to bring the Good News of God’s Kingdom to many lives (Luke 10).  May this offering of coats/blankets be a sign that this Good News of God's hope continues to spread in our world!

Family Promise's mission is to help transitional homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response. At Living Springs, we will have two opportunities to get involved:
  • On Feb. 12 at the first fish fry of the Lenten season, Trinity United Methodist in Blythewood will be bringing the Family Promise families  to Living Springs.  Right now they are scheduled to host three families – a mother & son (they were at our Trunk or Treat night), and the other two families has a total of 3 adults and 12 children.  We want to make them feel welcome, so you can volunteer to be a host/guide/conversationalist.
  • The other opportunity will be at St. Martin’s in the Fields and their greatest need is Dinner Providers 4:30 pm (2 adults for ea. Day) and Overnight Hosts (8 pm to 7:30 am – couple or 2 adults or ea. day).  St Martin’s is located off Forest Dr. on Clemson Ave. – they are hosting Feb. 21 thru Feb. 28.  A sign-up sheet will be posted in the administration building with all the slots that are available.  If you have a spirit-tug to help these families, contact Karen Kranz, Mike Davidson, or Debbie Zvejnieks for information.

Lessons for Sunday, January 31

First Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-10

God calls Jeremiah to be a prophet and consecrates him in the womb. Jeremiah’s task is to preach God’s word in the midst of the difficult political realities of his time, before the Babylonian exile. He is to make God known not only to Judah, but also to the nations.

Psalm: Psalm 71:1-6

From my mother’s womb you have been my strength. (Ps. 71:6)

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Christians in Corinth prided themselves on their spiritual gifts. Paul reminds them that God gives us many gifts through the Holy Spirit, but the purpose behind all of them is love, the kind of love that God showed us in Jesus Christ.

Gospel: Luke 4:21-30

People in Jesus’ hometown are initially pleased when he says that God will free the oppressed. Their pleasure turns to rage when he reminds them that God’s prophetic mission typically pushes beyond human boundaries so that mercy and healing are extended to those regarded as outsiders.

A Little Church Humor...

FIRST TIME USHERS
A LITTLE BOY IN CHURCH FOR THE FIRST TIME WATCHED AS THE USHERS PASSED AROUND THE OFFERING PLATES.
WHEN THEY CAME NEAR HIS PEW, THE BOY SAID LOUDLY, "DON'T PAY FOR ME DADDY I'M UNDER FIVE."

Do you have some church humor you'd like to share? We would love to share it too! Send your humor to Lisa in the office.
